    Shannon Burns|Sep 24, 2009

The ongoing bridge crisis between the Akwesasne Mohawks and the Canada Border Services Agency, or Canada Customs, escalated to new highs this week and this time even Akwesasne leaders have lost faith in a fair resolution to the summer-long border dilemma. Last week, CBSA began seizing Mohawk-owned vehicles passing through the temporary port of entry in Cornwall, accusing vehicle owners of failing to report directly to Canada Customs when coming from the U.S. Since the relocation of the CBSA...

  • Letter to the Editor:

    Sep 24, 2009

She:kon Akwesasneronon! With the troubles arising of the IGA supermarket, in the event it is closed and vacated of the name IGA. I have a suggestion for what should be done for that structure. My first question for all those parents out there, is this; What fun is there for our children to do in the long winter months? Yes, some kids love hockey, and ice skating, and there’s the library as well, but for those children who are not into hockey or skating, what is there? • Direct Action Needed to Resolve the Border Problem

    Doug George Kanentiio|Sep 24, 2009

The Akwesasne community is being manipulated into a crisis by the Canadian Border Security Agency. They knew that by placing a facility in Cornwall it would provoke the Mohawk people and they would then use an incident to point an accusatory finger our way and state that their fears were justified and that the need to carry weapons is essential. The CBSA may also think that by taking Mohawk cars and assessing huge fines the residents of Akwesasne will be so upset as to demand the leadership compromise and allow the custom agents to be armed...
