After losing to Canton, Massena varsity boy’s lacrosse swept Northwood and Horseheads.

On Tuesday, May 3, Massena lost 9-6 to visiting Canton. Kyran Sunday had a goal and an assist. Montana Pierce scored once. Nick Henrie scored three goals and an assist, Jacob Sheets scored once and Bobby Todd had a solo helper. Tyler Armstrong denied 16 shots.

Jake Facey paced Canton with three goals. Andrew McCormick and Jake Mattice split netminder detail for 22 saves combined.

Following a 10-8 win over Northwood on May 5, Massena narrowly downed host Horseheads 14-13 in overtime on Saturday, May 7.

Kendrick Angus passed to Nick Henrie who shot the game winning goal 25 seconds into OT.

Angus finished the game with five goals and two assists. Henrie had five goals and four assists. Kyran Sunday had two goals. Pat LaGrow and Blake Premo scored once. Jacob Sheets notched an assist. Tyler Armstrong stood tall in the net with 23 saves.

Girl’s Lacrosse

The Massena varsity girls lacrosse squadron added two more wins to their 2016 record, claiming contests against Indian River and Saranac Lake, while losing to Canton. As of press deadline, Massena’s record stood a 6-4.

Their Monday, May 2 bout with Indian River ended with Massena leaving the field with an 11-6 road win.

Cayla Hinkey lead Massena’s offense with three goals, while Kyrsten Stone had two goals and three assists. Abbey LaClair and Devin Kelly each scored twice. Gisele Todd made five saves.

Kyanna Fann led Indian River with two goals. Rebecca Monica covered the net for 12 saves.

The following evening, Massena conquered hosts Saranac Lake 12-4. Kelly notched three goals and two assists, while Stone notched three goals and a single helper. Hinkley, with one assist, and Julia Blair each scored twice. LaClair, with a solo helper, and Katelyn Kennedy each contributed solo goals.

For Saranac Lake, Ryley Fisher scored twice. Melissa Rath and Ava Day each scored once.

On Thursday, May 5, Massena fell to Canton 9-4.

Golf

Massena’s golf team is off to a strong start to their season with a 3-1 record after one week, and two Akwesasne players are contributing anchoring offensive roles on the links.

On Monday, May 2, Terrell Thomas and Shane Tarbell led the offense in a 226-273 win over Ogdensburg.

Thomas led the way with a 43, followed by Tarbell with a 45. Dylan Amo also shot a 45, followed by Jake Amo with 46, Ben Chilton 47 and Logan Chilton shooting a non-scoring round of 56.

Jake VanHouse led Ogdensburg with 49, followed by Coby Ryan with 53, Will Lanfear and Garrett Bell 56 each, Noah Moore 59 and Ben Hammond with a non-scoring 60.

Two nights later, Massena won a tri-meet over both Northwood and Malone, 233-236-239 respectively.

Thomas ended the contest with a 46 and Tarbell shot a 50. Dylan Tyo recorded a 44, Jake Amo 45, Ben Chilton 48 and Ben Sprague a non-scoring 54.

For Malone, Blake Pritchard had a 41, Matt Delisle 42, Adam Dumas, Logan Lamb and Nathan Hunter 52 each and Brendan Raville 55 (non-scoring).

On Friday, May 6, Massena fell to host Madrid-Waddington 204-232. Thomas and Tarbell once again led the way for Massena with respective scores of 41 and 46. Dylan Tyo and Chilton each recorded 48. Nick Livisturd carded a 49 and Jake Amo notched a non-scoring 53.

For M-W, Austin Delosh scored a 40, Owen Uppstrom and Lucas Palmer each scored 41, Zeb Zagrobelny 43 and Wade Lawrence a non-scoring 47.

Baseball

Massena varsity baseball took advantage of a doubleheader with Ogdensburg and defeated their hosts in both games, but later dropped a bout with Malone to improve their 2016 record to 6-7.

On Thursday, May 5, Massena bested OFA twice in a row, 11-1 and 10-1.

In the opening game, Massena’s victory included a seven-run fifth inning.

Massena pitcher Nate Bressard claimed the victory, striking out five and allowing two hits.

Ogdensburg’s Peyton Lalone allowed six sixth-inning hits, while Hayden Ives relieved him and struck out three straight in the seventh.

Massena’s Cody Peets had a single, a double and two RBIs. Bailey LaBarge, James Donnelly, Merrick Taraska and Evan Smith each batted singles. Ethan Marcello and Zach Ward each crossed home plate twice.

In the second match against OFA, Massena won the game early on with an eight-run first inning while Nick McKeel threw for the win.

Marcello batted a triple. LaBarge, Donnelly, Peets, Tyler Flynn, Taraska, Smith and Drew McMahon each made contact for singles.

For OFA, Lalone hit two singles and Jackson Troiano a double. A singles each came off the bats of Justyn McCormick, Jared Barr, Andrew Layng, Adam Rickett, Ethan Baldwin and Hayden Ives.

Later on, Massena dropped an 8-6 contest against Malone.

Malone quickly gained a game-winning lead, bringing home seven runners in the first two innings.

Ethan Marcello recorded three of their seven hits. Donnelly, Peets, Taraska and Zach Ward each had singles.
