  • Police investigating sexual assault complaint in Kana:takon

    Responding to requests for clarification, the Akwesasne Mohawk Police Service said Wednesday that they are investigating a complaint of sexual assault that was called in to them on June 27, 2008. Police said they responded to the complaint in the village of Kana:takon (St. Regis) where the alleged assault was said to have occurred. During the investigation two males were arrested.     St. Regis Mohawk Tribe Press Release - An informal vote was held recently in the St. Regis Mohawk Community to gauge public opinion regarding the St. Regis Mohawk Tribe’s current three-chief system.  This vote, however, was not official and not sanctioned by the St. Regis Mohawk Tribal Government.  The process for official referendums is one that must be recognized by the Tribal government and must follow the referendum process which defines voter eligibility and ensures that the voting is conducted properly.  The informal vote does not have an...

    The St. Regis Mohawk Tribe announced Monday that they will hold a special election for a sub-chief position, following Sub-Chief Elect Joseph Phillips’ failure to attend his swearing-in ceremony on July 1. “The election board of the St. Regis Mohawk Tribe has received official notification from Sub-Chief elect Joseph L.     Recently Staff Sgt. Austin Boots was home on his Mid-Tour leave from Iraq.  While home, he stopped by the St. Regis Mohawk School for a surprise visit to say thank you personally to all the 2nd grade students who sent care packages to his unit back in April.   Boots felt it was very important to say thank you to all of the kids in person for the tremendous support they showed for him and his men.     Mrs. Lillian M. Herne, age 88, of 1347 State Route 37, Hogansburg, died Sunday afternoon (July 6, 2008) at the Highland Nursing Home. She had been in failing  health for the past few months. She was born May 6, 1920 on the St. Regis Mohawk Reservation, the daughter  of Michael and Sarah Ransom Jacobs. She attended Mohawk Schools. She married  Jacob Herne on November 29, 1939 at the St. Regis Catholic Church with Rev.  Michael Jacobs, officiating. Mr. Herne predeceased her on February 4, 1945....
