If you were listening to CKON Thursday morning then you heard Reen Cook, live on air, get surprised by the Akwesasne Coalition for Community Empowerment. They presented her with a card and gifts thanking her for all the great things she does for the community. Reen, at first shocked and surprised by the group who stormed the radio booth, was then brought to tears by the gesture. Below is the contents of the card: Dear Reen, On behalf of the Akwesasne Coalition for Community Empowerment, we...
Territory of Akwesasne - The Minister of Public Safety Vic Toews, in announcing the creation of a new anti-contraband police task force to combat illegal tobacco sales, has once again missed the mark in adequately addressing the multi-jurisdictional problems that Akwesasne faces. Harsher sentences and more police are not the solution to a larger economic issue. Minister Toews seems to be bent on becoming a poster child of Idle No More with his John Wayne attitude towards First Nations people. “Minister Toews has consistently refused to meet w...

On January 15, 2010 my world as I knew it changed forever. I lost my son on what would’ve been his 21st birthday. Instead of celebrating his life we were mourning his death. From that day on it seemed as though our lives were shattered to pieces. Our family was never the same again. Things began to go downhill from that day forward and everyday seemed like a struggle. I thought things couldn’t get any worse, until the day that Akwesasne Housing Authority sent me an eviction notice. On June 23, 2012 I was given until 4pm to get all of my family...

The support group has grown from our original goals, offering not just emotional support but also offering some financial support as well to people affected with cancer. We have been increasing our...
LETTER TO THE EDITOR March 11, 2013 Economic Development: Casino? Hotel Entertainment Complex? At the general meeting last week, questions were raised as to the financial responsibility in sending 5 representatives to Tucson, Arizona for a casino conference. There has been money received by the Mohawk Council from the province of Ontario to investigate economic development opportunities for Akwesasne in Ontario. Some humor for our readers submitted by Johanne Jackson •Why do supermarkets make the sick walk all the way to the back of the store to get their prescriptions while healthy people can buy cigarettes at the front? •Why do people order double cheeseburgers, large fries, and a diet coke? •Why do banks leave vault doors open and then chain the pens to the counters? •Why do we leave cars worth thousands of dollars in our driveways and put our useless junk in the garage? Infants may have a symptom known as “apnea.” Apnea is a pause in the child’s breathing pattern. Pertussis is most...

This is a replica of a belt which was offered for sale in October 1972, by collectors through a Park Avenue auction gallery. The original was dug up from a grave together with the bones of the children who were buried with it, probably within the last century in New York State. White people who read this can rest fairly secure that when they die, their remains will not be disturbed. But Indian People find that the resting places of their grandmothers and grandfathers are fair play for...
