  • Letters to the Editor

    Feb 27, 2014

To The Editor, Recently I attended the financial public meeting held at the tribal community building. Many surprising things were said by the auditors who spoke. Two auditors were present and the other spoke on the telephone from a loudspeaker. Our chief financial officer was also present. Finally it has to be asked. How can this tribe have a casino resort which does not give out per-capita payments to all of our tribal members? Someone said that the tribal council uses the gaming earnings to fund the “heating fuel” allotments to community mem...

One of the most profound teachings of the Mohawk people is that we exist in a place and time within a universe which is responsive to who we are as human beings. We have been given the gift of life to know the world and the intelligence to understand why we live. We are essentially a happy people with enhanced abilities to create societies in which the expression of joy is pervasive. Only by adhering to the individual and collective rituals of thanksgiving are we liberated to realize the true potential of the human mind. There is no fear in...

  • Bringing our 4-H Families Together

    Feb 27, 2014

By Connie Gerow, 4-H Tribal Mentoring Coordinator In this day and age, families are often challenged to find the time to sit down and have dinner together. More often than not, many families struggle to balance work schedules and children activities. This constant shift for family meal times has become less and less. Ultimately for many families, this has resulted in families that eat on the run and miss out on the benefits of family time. Therefore, in an effort to promote strong family bonds...

  • Acceptance

    An Anonymous Mom|Feb 27, 2014

Its no secret that when we broke the news to the boys about another baby they had polar opposite reactions. Big Brother excited and Little Brother mad at the world. Big Brother would talk about the new baby on its way to anyone and everyone who asked. Little Brother’s whole face would drop and he’d say something like, “I don’t want to talk about it.” or “I’m not gonna be a big brother.” People’s reactions to him were mixed, some thought he was kidding knowing he’s always been a jokester. Others looked at me as if to say, “How could you do that...

  • Senior Moments

    Feb 27, 2014

By Rosemary Bonaparte As we age sometimes the first thing to go is our hearing. I never realized it until I’m ready to shut off the TV and I notice that it is turned way up. Here I thought everyone left the room when I watched because I don’t like vampires, car chases, sadistic cruelty or heavy metal. I did hear about one man who went to a doctor about his wife’s hearing. He said he was worried about her so the doctor told him to check it out by going to the farthest part of the house and tell her something. Then try it a little closer and, if...
