"The Grizzlies"

The Grizzlies will be shown at the Port Theatre in Cornwall.

I went with my family to see the new lacrosse movie "The Grizzlies" in Ottawa a few weeks ago. It is a true story of a Native community in Nunavut and their introduction to our game. The young Native actors were very natural and believable in their roles. They were funny too.

The movie addressed issues affecting so many of our young teens – suicide, drugs and alcohol, poverty, teen pregnancy, family dysfunction. But it also showed how strong we can be in facing these adversities.

I was really moved by this movie, even saw it twice! It didn't take much coaxing to get our friend, Larry Sylvain, owner of the Port Theatre in Cornwall, to bring "The Grizzlies" to his independent theatre. Happily, it will begin showing there this Friday for a limited run. There is strong language in the movie so I wouldn't recommend it for young children. I would highly recommend this movie as it was a great springboard for a thoughtful conversation with my nephews and nieces.
