Medicine Men wrap up regular season, playoffs underway

Akwesasne's Bear's Den Mohawk Medicine Men have concluded their regular season and are in a best-of-three playoff series against the Tyendinaga Thunder.

The opening game, played July 11 at St. Lawrence Centre Arena in Massena, ended with the Thunder winning by just a single goal, 15-14. Game two was to have been played Sunday, July 15 at Deseronto Community Centre.

The Med Men came out strong early, outscoring the competition 6-1 in the first period. Isaac Thrasher scored twice, along with goals off the sticks of Josh Huiatt, Codan Pedelford, Mick Miller and Aidan Conlon. Cam McLean netted the Thunder's goal.

The second period saw Tyendinaga pull ahead, outscoring Akwesasne 8-5 throughout the 20 minutes. Medicine Men points came from Thrasher, Jack Mintz, Miller, Dillon Tullet and Huiatt. The Mohawk squadron put up a fight in the second period, but was one goal short of forcing sudden death. They scored three goals to Tyendinaga's six.

Huiatt led the Medicine Men offense with four goals and two assists. Thrasher netted a hat trick with one helper. Conlon scored once with two assists. Miller scored twice. Tullet and Mintz each scored once and assisted once. Pedelford netted a solo marker. One assist apiece came from John Grossett, Dekha Mitchell, Kiernan Lafevre and Sose George.

On the Tyendinaga side, McLean scored four goals with three assists. Dakota Brown scored three goals and three assists. Nick Brayton scored two goals with three assists. Cain Brown, Tommy Thomas and Braeden Smith each scored twice with one helper. Tristan Staff, Matt Cox and Ashton Maracle all tallied solo assists.
