The United States Customs and Border Protection agency recently implemented a first-in-the nation program in attempts to expedite border crossings at the Massena Port-of-Entry. The majority of the traffic at the Massena Port are residents from Akwesasne. Normally, Akwesasne residents had to wait while Border officers manually typed in information provided on tribal ID, status cards and red cards since they are not barcode readable. U.S.CBP now has a barcode reader that can capture information off an “ordinary” driver’s license. Akwesasne resid...

In the wake of a long list of acquittals of the accused in the deaths of Jon Styres, Colten Boushie, Tina Fontaine, Cindy Gladue, there have been loud calls for reform to address Canada’s blatant systemic racism in the criminal justice system. The Canadian justice system works against Indigenous people at every level, from police checks and arrests to bail denial and detention, sentencing miscarriages and disparities and high incarceration rates. These trends are also well-documented in countries like the United States, Australia and New Z...
Ottawa. We see once again that Canada has a legal system, but not a justice system. This is the third trial verdict this year that tells First Nations that our lives do not matter, along with 30 years of documented systemic discrimination and racism in the Canadian j...

Women’s health clearly does not concern Trump. Trump has even tweeted about breastfeeding and how infant formula should be made available to the poor and malnourished, missing the whole point of breastfeeding. Trump was referring to an article published in the New York Times on Sunday, July 8th, how Trump’s officials meddled in a United Nations global health meeting in May that was set to approve a simple, uncontroversial resolution supporting breastfeeding. According to the New York Times, the Trump administration was bowing to the int...
