A Salmon River cross country and track runner has been chosen to be among 200 athletes and will represent New York state in the 30th Down Under Sports Tournament in Australia later in the summer.

Ivan King is leaving June 26 to compete in the cross-country event during the 10-day tournament in Brisbane, Australia and the Gold Coast area.

"It's really awesome to hear about, quite the opportunity, once in a lifetime," King said. "I feel very honored to be handpicked to compete in this"

He will run in a 5.7-kilometer race in addition to a 5k "All-American Race." In the 5.7k race, runners complete the course in staggered legs and compete for the fastest times.

King said he's been getting up early and running for about an hour each morning in preparation.

A 16-year-old junior at Salmon River, he runs on the school's cross-country teams and specializes in the 4x800-meter relay and triple jump on the track and field squadron.

He says he wants to continue competing after finishing high school.

"I'm planning on either going to SUNY Adirondack or Paul Smith's for culinary, but I plan on definitely competing on their track team," he said.
