Massena Central basketball and hockey summaries, Jan. 15-20

The Massena varsity girls basketball and hockey team were unable to fashion a win during the week of Jan. 15. Meanwhile, the boys basketball team dropped a contest to Malone and the boys hockey team skated to a win followed by two tie games.

The Lady Raiders varsity basketball team was upended by Franklin Academy 51-42 at home on Jan. 19. For Massena, Alexis Jacobs netted five points, as did Bailey Trumble and Al'lainya Dumas. Paige Perry led the team with 10 points and Alyssa Eubank scored nine. Nova LaGrow scored four points. Sydnee Carroll and Hannah Greco scored two points each. Malone's Leah Gallagher scored a game-high 11 points. Her teammates Vee Monette scored eight, Madison Ansari nine, Caitlin Douglas and Taylor Gadway six each, Haley Raville five, Brooke Pritchard four and Allie Lewis two.

The girls hockey team's week ended in a three-game losing streak. It started with a loss to Saranac Lake on Jan. 15, 10-3.

Two nights later, they lost 8-3 to Canton on their home ice. Canton scored five unanswered goals in the first period before they traded markers throughout the rest of the bout. Massena netminder Mackenzie Garrow, who has been playing a strong season so far, was sidelined due to an injury. Massena's goals came off the sticks of Lindsey LaDue, Meg Wilmshurst and Mackenzie LaClair. Kylie Letham, Hannah Chilton and Julia Blair notched assists. Katy Underwood, who normally plays at forward, played goaltender in Garrow's absence for seven saves. On the Canton side, Etta Corburn scored two goals with an assist. Lizzy Christy also netted a pair of goals. Nikki Husinec (one assist), Sydnee Francis, Michaela Powers and Katie Fobare all scored once. Catherine DeCoteau fashioned two assists. Katie Premo covered the net for two stanzas and blocked 19 shots. Katie Weber took over for the closing frame and denied 11 scoring attempts.

The Massena girls then went on to an 8-0 loss to Beekmantown on Jan. 19 and a 4-1 defeat at the hands of Plattsburgh the following day.

The boys hockey team downed Salmon River and then tied two straight against Canton and Vestal.

At home against Salmon River on Jan. 17, the Raiders boys hockey team tied in the second period and then fired in two goals at the tail end of the final stanza. After 1:04 in the middle frame, Robby Southwick opened scoring on a play set up by Chris Paige and Nick Morrell. Dylan Wylie tied the game at 7:52 with an assist from Kaden Conners. In the third period at 3:17, Garrett Engstrom won the game for Massena with an assist going to Cameron Frost. Paige scored an insurance empty-net goal with six seconds left on the clock. Nate Moffitt made 25 saves for Massena and John Jacobs blocked 19 shots for Salmon River.

Two nights later in Canton, Massena played to a 3-3 draw. Bobby Wells scored the opening goal for Canton on a two-man advantage at 11:06, assisted by Jack Finnerty and John Mahoney. Mahoney then made it 2-0 just 48 seconds later with assists from Finnerty and Sam Martin. Massena's first goal came with 1:48 left in the frame when Matt Derouchie made a pass that bounced off a Canton skater and into the net. At 5:06 in the second, Paige tied the game and then Canton regained their lead four minutes later with a goal from Finnerty set up by John Trathen and Martin on a power play. Ben Chilton scored the final goal of the game for Massena after taking a pass from Nick Morrell. Massena's Merrick Taraska made 26 saves. Canton netminder Jerod Burchell denied 36 scoring tries.

On Jan. 20 in Massena, the Raiders played to a 1-1 tie with Vestal. Nick Morrell scored the home team's only goal about nine minutes into the opening stanza on a play set up by Gage Fiacco. Moffitt made 36 saves.

On Jan. 18 in Malone, the Raiders boys basketball team came back from being down 41-37 after three quarters to win 67-56 over Malone. Tyler Bacon netted a game-high 31 points. Alex Rusaw scored 13 points, Josh Sheets nine, Zack LaBarge and Chris McGregor four each and Kaleb Miller two. For Malone, Cole Fountain scored 18 points, Payton Poirier 16, Hunter Swan 11, Hunter Asari eight, Jake VanSteenburg four and Harshan Johal two.
