Massena Boys & Girls Lax Fall to Canton

Massena girls and boys lacrosse teams dropped their first Northern Athletic Conference games of the 2017 season.

The boys team played a tough 15-10 contest against Canton at the Potsdam High School turf field on April 2. Massena jumped out to an early 1-0 lead, but solid offensive work had Canton ahead 4-3 going into the second quarter. The teams each scored twice in the second stanza, with the scoreboard showing 6-5 Canton going into the second half. Canton had a third-quarter offensive surge where they leapt ahead to 13-8 going into the closing frame, where each team scored twice.

Kyran Sunday led the offense with four goals and an assist. Hunter Pyke and Kainen Francis-Thompson each scored twice and tallied one helper. Isaiah Cree and Gage Fiacco each scored single goals. Jacob Sheets had a solo assist.

On the Canton side, Isaac Thrasher had three goals and four assists for a game-high seven points.

Massena's varsity girls lacrosse team narrowly loss to Canton 10-9 at SUNY Canton on March 29.

Abigail Johnson lead Massena's offense with three goals. Kyrsten Stone scored twice with a helper. Blayke Gibson scored twice, while Cayla Hinkley and Claire Tyo netted singletons. Julia Blair assisted one goal. Gisele Todd backstopped for 12 saves.

Morgan Whitman paced Canton with four goals. Paige Glasgow turned aside six shots.

Canton hopped out to a 2-0 lead with goals from Whitman and Laura Wells a mere 12 seconds apart. Massena came back with a four-goal rally, including Stones two, which concluded with just under five minutes left in the first half. Mimi Huscinec responded for Canton. With 33 seconds left in the half, leaving her squad down 4-3 going into the second half. Canton regained momentum with second half goals by Whitman. Massena's Johnson scored for Massena with 15:51 left in the half, assisted by Stone. Canton answered with a 5-1 rally ending with their lead at 10-6 with 7:53 to go. Massena's Gibson scored two goals interrupted by Johnson, leaving Massena one goal behind with 19 seconds left, and they would be held at bay until the final buzzer.

Massena's March 31 home game against Saranac Lake was postponed.
