ÓN:KWE TO HOLD MEETING MARCH 30TH

ÓN:KWE

Tehatikonsontonkie “faces that are coming”

Preserving traditional knowledge for our grandchildren.

Will be hosting a Community garden initiative for those interested Kawehnoke residents.

The meeting will be Thursday, March 30th at 5:00pm at Ashley Thompson’s home on Chief Thompson Lane on Kawehnoke.

WHO WE ARE:

ÓN:KWE is a non-profit group that meets regularly. ÓN:KWE was formed in 2015 by a group of families who all shared a similar goal to work together to ensure that traditional knowledge is passed on to our grandchildren. ÓN:KWE was the name chosen by a youth member, and the Mohawk word Tehatikonsontonkie was suggested by another youth member as a slogan, as it stands for “faces that are coming” or the next generations.

Our goals are to continue to pass on traditional knowledge through the implementation of traditional practices, to create a model of vocational agricultural practices that support traditional ways of life, and to develop a self-sustaining cooperative business that allows us to provide food to our members and our community.

This past year, in 2016 we received our first major funding source, which was from the Mohawks of Akwesasne Community Settlement Trust we received $41,587.06. We are grateful to have been given this opportunity to serve the community and ensure that our cultural ways are passed down to the future generations. The funds were used to purchase tools, equipment and supplies needed to continue to provide a garden to the community. We hosted a number of events including: youth cooking workshops, canning workshops, corn washing workshops, teachings about seed saving, healthy eating and the importance of growing your own garden. We also sent three of our members to the Indigenous Farming Conference in Minnesota in March.

WHAT IS THE MEETING ABOUT?

We will be talking about our group, about this year’s planting season, past projects and we will be discussing future farming projects on Kawehnoke.

HOPE TO SEE YOU THERE!
