Massena Volleyball, Football Seasons Come to an End in State Playoffs

The Massena varsity football and volleyball seasons came to an end in state Class A playoffs.

The volleyball team lost 3-0 to Jamesville-DeWitt on Nov. 8 at SUNY Potsdam in the opening round of state play. They close their season with a 17-2 record, undefeated in the regular season. They have not lost a regular season game since 2014.

“We lost in three but it was a good match, had some really good moments,” Coach Margaret Farrell said via email following the contest.

Against J-D, Tatum LaFrance had nine points, three assists and two blocks. Mckenzee Lazore had three points, four assists and three blocks. Tianna Back registered five digs, three service points and two kills. Jenna Tarbell and Brittany Condon fashioned four digs each. Gabby Durant and Alyssa Eubank each tallied three blocks.

The football team lost 57-10 to Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake on Nov. 11 at Potsdam High School in the state Class A quarterfinals.

Quarterback Montana Pierce passed for 137 yards, including four pass plays of more than 20 yards. Michael Brown gained 86 yards on four receptions.

Massena opened the game with a 3-0 lead, but that was the only time they were ahead. The opening kickoff turned into a Massena 12-play, 65-yard drive ending in a 30-yard field goal off the boot of Merrick Taraska.

BH-BL answered with a 49-yard kickoff return ending on the Massena 41 yard line. After three plays, Jake Stanko blasted into the endzone from seven yards out. He ended with five of the team’s eight touchdowns.
