Indian Time - A Voice from the Eastern Door

The hurrah on the local lacrosse scene took place last weekend but the top award went to Kahnawake. The Randall "Mann" Jacobs Memorial Lacrosse tournament was held at the Travis Solomon Memorial Box at Generations Park and teams came in from Tyendinaga and Kahnawake.

In the championship game, the Crossroads team met the Kahnawake Rapids and it went right down to the wire before the Rapids squeaked out the 7-6 win. The first period of that final ended 3-3. In the second, Kahnawake outscored the Akwesasne based team 2-1 to hold on to the 5-4 lead. Both teams had big chances to pull ahead further but Blue Cloud Lahache in the Rapids net and Bill Perras in the Crossroads cage were helped out by the pipes.

Kahnawake made it 6-4 early in the third on a powerplay goal. In this tournament there can be no more than one player in the penalty box and they scored on that penalty shot.

The Rapids' Chad Norton scored their final goal as he came tearing off the bench to go one on one with Perras and score. The Crossroads club then scored two last minute goals by Kariwate Mitchell and Raweras Mitchell to set up the thrilling end. They pulled their goalie Perras for the extra runner and in the final seconds Raweras Mitchell had a swipe at it but failed to connect.

This was the second meeting between the two clubs of this tournament as their first game ended in a 14-8 Crossroads win.

The other teams in this tournament were Mann's Masters, Potato Bowl Posse and Tyendinaga.

Crossroads defeated Tyendinaga 8-3 and Potato Bowl Posse 6-5. Kahnawake Rapids also defeated the Potato Bowl Posse 8-4 in their earlier game.

The Posse won their game over Mann's Masters 10-1.

There were several games scrubbed in the tournament but it was a successful event to pay tribute to Mann Jacobs. He was equipment Manager/Trainer for the Akwesasne Warriors Senior "B" Lacrosse team of the 1970's. Many senior players today had fathers who played with the powerhouse Warriors and his hard work and dedication to the sport will be remembered for years to come.
