Indian Time - A Voice from the Eastern Door

Another Akwesasne team took top honors in the Cornwall Soccer League.

The Lady Devils of the Cornwall and District Soccer league won their Division 3 Title last week in a two game final against Les Girlz.

Last year the Akwesasne Stars won their Division Two Championship.

Amanda King and Jenna Prieur did all the scoring for the Devils in the Monday, August 22 game. Each scored two in a 4-2 win.

Two nights later the teams met again at Optimist field in Cornwall. The Devils wanted to finish off the Cornwall club early spending most of the first half in their zone. They got up close three times in a row but missed the net.

April Castagnier of the Devils finally put them on the score sheet midway through the opening half. She rushed the net and booted it in at point blank range to score.

Prieur netted their second goal at the midway point of the period and late in the first half Carrie Caldwell jumped on a loose ball in the Girlz' goal crease and scored to end the half with a 3-0 lead.

But Les Girlz started to pick up some momentum to make this a game. They kept the ball in the Devils end throughout most of the period while managing one goal and that was how the game ended.

The local Ladies soccer program is basically a year round event. Organizers are putting together the Akwesasne league which plays at Generations Park and Salmon River Central and that is tentatively scheduled for this weekend. When that wraps up and the soccer fields are covered in snow, the Cornwall Indoor League begins with games at the Benson Center. When that finishes up the Cornwall District Soccer league, which just concluded, begins play again next May.
