Massena Sports Roundup

The Massena varsity golf team earned a Section 10 golf title and Division I crown on Friday, May 27 at Partridge Run Golf and Country Club in Canton.

Massena carded a 453 over Malone and Gouverneur, who each posted 458.

Terrell Thomas bolstered Massena's score with a 78. Shane Tarbell recorded a 96, along with an 86 from Jake Amo, Nick Linstad with a 96 and Ben Sprague with a 97.

Boy's Lacrosse

Massena are the Section 10 boys lacrosse champions, thanks to a game-winning goal from Kainen Francis-Thompson with less than a minute to go on the game.

On Thursday, May 26, Massena defeated Canton 11-10 for the 2016 section title, their first this century.

Kendrick Angus tallied four goals. Kyran Sunday managed two goals and two assists. Nick Henrie ended the game with two goals and three assists. Francis-Thompson scored twice. Hunter Pyke recorded two goals. Tyler Armstrong denied 12 Canton scoring attempts.

For Canton, Josh Huiatt scored three goals and an assist, and Garrett Glasgow also tallied a hat trick. Mark Mahoney and Isaac Thrasher each scored once and assisted a play. Sam Martin and Eb Thasher each scored once. Andrew McCormick and Jake Mattice split goalkeeper duties for a combined 16 saves.

Massena was to have faced the Section 3 Class B champ on June 1 at 5 p.m., after press deadline.

Following the bout, Henrie was named 2016 2016 Northern Athletic Conference MVP. Huiatt was named Section 10 All-American.

Girl's Lacrosse

Massena's varsity girls lacrosse team will move on to compete for the Section 10 title after defeating last year's champion Salmon River 16-8 on Wednesday, May 25.

Massena was to have faced Canton in Potsdam after press deadline.

Against Salmon River, Massena gained a 10-2 advantage at the half and quelled a rally in the second half.

Devin Kelly was the top scorer with four goals. Cayla Hinkley and Julia Blair each netted hat tricks. Kyrsten Stone scored two goals and an assist. Abigail Johnson scored twice. Maddi Dillabough and Katelyn Kennedy each scored solo markers. Abbey LaClair assisted two plays. Gisele Todd turned aside 14 shots.

For Salmon River, Meg Martin and Halle Cook each scored pairs of goals. Jillian Benedict scored and assisted once. Marietta Jock, Kiarra Smoke and Taylor Swamp each scored one time. Dana Thompson handled 11 saves.
