Massena’s varsity boy’s lacrosse team posted an impressive end to their 2016 regular season, earning Coach Kris Covell his 100th win and following it with number 101.

Covell’s milestone win came on Tuesday, May 17 over Salmon River. The game was also the first time Massena bested Salmon with Covell at the helm.

Massena closes their regular season with a 14-2 record.

After the match was tied 10-all at the half, Massena returned to the field to outscore their opponents 5-2 in the fourth stanza.

Kendrick Angus led the offense with five goals and a helper. Nick Henrie scored three times and assisted three plays. Kyran Sunday had two goals and an assist. J.P. Chauvin scored twice. Kainen Francis, Montana Pierce and Blake Premo each scored once and assisted a single play. Tyler Armstrong backstopped for 10 saves.

On the Salmon side, Tanner Tarbell scored three goals. Skkylar Thomas had two goals and two assists and Konner Sunday a goal and a helper. Isaiah Skidders scored twice. Alan Jacobs, Cash Mitchell and Memphis Mitchell each scored once. Troi Benedict turned aside nine scoring attempts.

Massena closed out the regular season with a 22-2 blowout win over visiting Saranac Lake.

Massena opened the bout with 10 unanswered first quarter goals and never looked back.

Angus scored five goals, as did Henrie with an additional five assists. Francis scored two goals and had four assists. Jacob Sheets had three goals. Montana Pierce, Isaiah Cree and Gage Fiacco each scored and assisted once. Cameron Frost and Matt Derochie each scored single goals. Sunday, Mike Gardner and Blake Premo logged single assists. Tyler Armstong made 11 saves.

Saranac Lake’s Jarrett Ashton and Hunter LaHart scored the team’s two goals. Ward Walton made 14 saves.

Girl’s Lacrosse

Massena girl’s varsity lacrosse posted two wins to end their 2016 regular season on a positive note.

On Monday, May 16, they worked to an 8-3 lead at the half to defeat Ogdensburg 18-7.

Kyrsten Stone led the scoresheet for Massena with six goals and a helper. Abigail Johnson had three goals. Devin Kelly, with two assists, and Cayla Hinkley, with one assist, each scored twice. Blake Gibson fired in a pair of goals. Katelyn Kennedy and Gabrielle Puente each scored once. Raechel Davis assisted one play. Kelly and Maddi Dillabough split goaltender duties for a combined two saves.

Lizzy Peo led OFA shooters with three goals. Marissa Foster blocked 12 shots.

Massena’s final regular season contest of the year ended in an 8-4 road win over Potsdam on Wednesday, May 18.

Johnson led the offense for Massena with three goals. Kelly scored twice. Stone had a goal and two assists. Julia Blair and Blake Gibson scored one time apiece. Gisele Todd covered the net for 11 saves.

Potsdam’s Kalie Grant scored three times. Josie Bruso scored the other goal. Hannah Gray turned aside 15 shots.

Massena ends their regular season with a 10-4 record.

Golf

In three matches played over a five-day period, Massena’s varsity golf team racked up two more wins to avenge an early week loss.

They started the week of May 16 with a 224-231 loss to host Franklin Academy. For Massena, Terrell Thomas posted a 46 while Shane Tarbell carded a 47. Jake Amo shot a 45, Dylan Tyo 46, Ben Chilton 47, Ben Sprague 54, Logan Chilton 56 and Jason Zembek 58.

For Malone, Nathan Hunter sunk a game best of 43. Adam Dumas and Matt Delisle each recorded 44, Logan Lamb 46, Blake Pritchard 47, Brendan Raville 48, Joey Brown 49 and Will Perrigo 50.

Massena’s next match saw them avenge the loss, downing Madrid-Waddington 226-238 two afternoons later.

On Friday, May 20, Massena defeated visiting Potsdam 217-224. Thomas led the team with a 40. Amo and Chilton each tallied a 43. Bailey Terry carded 45, Nick Linstad 46 and Ben Sprague a non-scoring 50.

For Potsdam, Nolan Towne sunk a 41, Carson Regan 44, Kenny Eurto and Riley Clark 45 each, Charlie Helenbrook 49 and Romano Sergi a non-scoring 55.

Softball

The Massena varsity softball contingent split a doubleheader and went on to take their following two meet-ups with Gouverneur and Canton.

Massena dropped the first game of a Wednesday, May 18 Franklin Academy doubleheader, losing the opening match 9-1 and claiming the second 14-5.

The following evening saw Massena defeat Canton 15-9. Massena worked to an 11-0 win after three innings, then were outscored 9-4 in the next two innings.

Reaghan Peets tossed for the win, striking out four with three walks and giving up 14 hits. Kate Furnia was tagged with a loss, sitting down six batters and walking two.

Massena had 15 hits, with three apiece coming off the bats of Brittany Streeter, Sydnee Carroll and Carly Amo. Abbey Paduano had a single, a double and crossed home plate three times. Shaunessy LaClair had a single and scored once. Peets batted a double and Kelly Southwick a single.

For Canton, Furnia went 3-3 at the plate with one double. Lilly Clifford had three hits and two runs, while Brittany Wilcox and Meridith Drury each hit twice and scored once. Ticia Yerdon had two hits, Elizabeth Burke a double and a run and Sabrina Reed a single and two runs scored.

On Friday, May 20, Massena won over host Gouverneur 27-14 that included a grand slam home run from Amber Thomas.

The first three innings saw Massena fall behind 7-6 and take the game back with an 11-run rally in the fourth inning.

Thomas pitched for the win, fanning nine and walking three while giving up 14 hits and five errors. Hannah Stowell started for Gouverneur and took the loss. Brooklyn Wilson pitched 2.3 relief innings, with Stowell returning to close the bout.

Massena’s Thomas had three hits, including a grand slam home run in the fourth, with five runs scored. Alyssa Eubank went 4-6 at the bat, knocking two doubles and scoring six runs. Southwick went 3-5 with four RBIs and one run. Peets also went 3-5 with three runs scored.

Gouverneur’s Aleesha LaBow and Jasmine Mattice each went 3-5 with a double and two runs. Tori Hartle had a two-run homer. Alexis Row had a double and a run.

Baseball

Massena’s varsity baseball team claimed a shutout win over Canton and then fell to Malone over the week of May 16.

In the Canton contest, Massena parlayed an eight-run barrage in the second inning into a convincing 17-0 win.

Nate Bressard added a win to his record, striking out six batters, walking one and allowing two hits.

David Norman drew the loss and was relieved after two innings by Jarod Burchell. Jesse Butler pitched the last two innings for Canton.

James Donnelly, for Massena, contributed three hits, a triple, three RBIs and a run scored. Ethan Marcello batted a single and a double. Alex Rusaw hit the ball twice, scored twice and had an RBI. Merrick Taraska hit and scored twice each. Connor McGrath recorded an RBI single.

Two Canton batters singled.

The following evening, Massena dropped an 8-6 bout with Franklin Academy.

Andrew McMahon hurled for the loss and was relieved by Taraska. Their combined stats for the game showed four strikeouts, three walks and 11 hits allowed.

Malone’s Evan Keegan earned the win, fanning six batters. Bailey Conklin relieved him in the final inning, striking out three.

Massena’s Cody Peets had two RBIs and two singles. Zach Ward had two hits, an RBI and a run scored. Tyler Flynn connected for a single. Bailey LaBarge had one hit.

Malone’s Keegan had two singles and an RBI. Jared Moody had a single and a triple. Jordan Boyea had two singles, scored twice and had an RBI. Conklin, Jordan Scharf, Ian Mahoney, Steven Marshall and Nick Boyea each singled.
