MASSENA -- After recognizing nine graduating senior members, the Massena boys hockey team quickly dominated Potsdam on Wednesday, Feb. 17.
Prior to dropping the puck, the team paid tribute to Akwesasne students Turner Thomas and Shane Tarbell, along with their teammates Logan Brothers, Robert Todd, Nicholas Henrie, Patrick LaGrow, Maddox Merry, Patrick Manning and Ben Sprague.
Massena opened the game with three goals in six minutes, adding a fourth before the end of the first period and never looked back. Nick Kozsan scored the only necessary goal 2:13 into the bout.
Cameron Plourde led Massena with a hat trick. Nate Bressard and Josh Underwood each had a goal and a helper. Ben Sprague scored a single goal. Matt Derouchie had three assists, Thomas two, and Todd, EJ Miller, Manning and LaGrow all recorded single assists. Brothers turned aside 13 shots.
The previous weekend, Massena took the consolation game at their tournament at Massena Arena. Massena came from trailing 3-0 to beat Pelham 4-3.
Manning, Sprague and Underwood all came through in just over 4:30 in the second period. Sprague and Underwood passed to Miller with 2:08 left in regulation, who scored the game-winning goal. Jake Kormanyos blocked 25 shots for Massena.
The evening prior, Massena fell to St. Joseph's 3-1 in the tourney's opening match-up.
Merry took a pass from Plourde on a powerplay at 13:05 for the game's first and Massena's only marker.
A stalemate middle stanza was following by a third period where St. Joe's took control with three goals. Brothers kept 33 shots at bay for Massena.
MCHS Boys Baskeball
The Massena boys varsity basketball team will compete in the NYSPHSAA Class A playoffs after claiming the Section 10 Class A title over Franklin Academy.
Meanwhile, the Massena girls varsity hoopsters' season came to an end after falling to FA.
After trailing 19-9 going into the second quarter, Bailey Terry nailed a three-point shot at the buzzer to leave Massena ahead 29-28 at the half.
Goyco punched in a late three-pointer in the third quarter to bring Massena to a 40-36 lead going into the last stanza.
After trading leads throughout the fourth quarter, Massena worked its way to a 49-48 lead following a three-pointer from Xavier Viskovich. Goyco then completed two field goals to push Massena ahead 53-48 with less than two seconds on the clock for the win.
Terry finished with a game-high 16 points, Viskovich tallied 13, Goyco nine, Nick McKeel eight, LaBarge three and Donnelly two.
Jayson Spaulding led Malone with 12 points.
Massena will now get set to take on a yet-to-be determined sectional champion in the overall semifinals.
MCHS Girls Basketball
The Massena girls fell to Franklin Academy.
Malone pulled ahead early in the second quarter and held a 21-15 lead at the half, which they held for the remainder of the contest. Thanks to an 11-point run late in the game, Malone walked away with a 53-37 win.
Massena's Sydnee Carroll led the game with 14 points. Lexis Jacobs had six, Nova LeGrow four, three apiece came from Paige Perry, Alyssa Eubank, Sophia Rusaw and Erin McCarthy, while Jaylee Jones had two.
