Massena Sports Wrap-up

 


MCH Baseball

The Massena Red Raiders baseball squad bested Salmon River for the NAC Central Division title. They were to have faced the Franklin Academy Huskies on Wednesday, May 27 for the Section 10 Class A banner. Before getting the division title game, Massena fell to Ogdensburg Free Academy and beat Potsdam.

On Monday, May 19, they fell 8-1 to the host OFA Blue Devils. Bailey Hewitt scored Massena’s run. Jacob Vierno earned the loss, giving up seven runs in five innings on the mound. Nick McKeel finished the game. Massena regained their focus over the next 24 hours, returning to the diamond to beat Potsdam 18-4.

Thirteen Massena batters generated seven runs in the first inning. The effort included a two-run homer from Isaiah Dillabough and a two-run double from Bailey LaBarge. The Raiders followed with three runs in the second inning, four in the third, and four in the sixth. Dillabough spent six innings on the mound, striking out seven, walking four and scattering five hits. Connor McGraw pitched the final frame, striking out one and walking one. Connor Prosper earned the loss for Potsdam.

Massena’s Jayce Lanning recorded four hits, including a triple, five RBIs and two runs. Bailey Cortese was 4-4 at-bat with three RBIs and a run. LaBarge went 3-4 with a double, three RBIs and two runs. Dillabough fashioned two hits with three runs. Patrick Manning had a single, a double, two RBIs and three runs. Isaac Ward had two hits and two runs. Ethan Marcello had a hit and three runs Josh LaShomb had an RBI, a run and a hit. Josh Manley scored one run. Potsdam’s Jacob Keleher went 3-3 at the bat with three runs.

Two days later, host Massena clinched the NAC Central banner over the Salmon River Shamrocks 17-4. Salmon River was leading 2-1 after two innings, before Massena reclaimed dominance with a seven-run rally in the bottom of the third. Josh LaShomb pitched eight strikeouts with six walks and five hits through five innings, recording the win. Nick McKeel and Connor McGraw each took over for an inning, respectively striking out one and two.

Shamrock Jordan Wood struck out five while allowing 15 hits and taking the loss.

Massena’a Isaac Ward had four hits, a double and four runs. Devin Page was 3-3 at-bat, with four RBIs and two runs. Bailey LaBarge hit two and scored two. Bailey Hewlett had two hits and a run. Wood led Salmon River’s offense with two doubles and a run. Brandon Bryington, Tyler Brooks and Tyler Sisto each batted singles and crossed the plate once.

The Shamrocks are scheduled to have competed for the Section 10 Class B title starting Tuesday at OFA.

MCH Boys Lax

After beating the Ogdensburg Free Academy Blue Devils in the opening round, the Massena Red Raiders fell to the Canton Golden Bears in the semi-final round of the Section 10 boys lacrosse playoffs, ending their season at a 14-4 record.

After jumping out to a 9-1 lead by the end of the first quarter, Massena held onto their lead to beat OFA 18-4 on Monday, May 18 at Mike Nichols Field.

Kendrick Angus and Sako Rourke led the Massena offense with three goals and three assists each. Cole Allen fired in four goals and assisted a teammate. Hunter Pyke fashioned three goals and an assist. Nick Henrie scored two goals and added three assists. Montana Pierce (1 assist), Brendan Broderick and Jacob Sheets each scored once. Evan Kassian had two assists. Blake Premo recorded a single helper. Tyler Armstrong blocked 10 shots.

For OFA, Nate Peo broke scored three times. Cody Rolfe had nine saves.

On the following day, Massena scored the opening goal against the host Canton Golden Bears before losing control of the game and never recovering for a 19-8 loss.

Kendrick Angus and Sako Rourke were Massena’s leading scorers with respective hat tricks. Cole Allen scored twice. Tyler Armstrong denied 15 scoring attempts.

MCH Girls Softball

The Massena Lady Raiders softball squad closed out their regular season on a high note, jumping out to an early 7-1 lead and hanging on for a 27-5 win over Potsdam on Tuesday, May 19.

Vanessa Kirkey added a win to her record with nine strikeouts and three walks, while allowing four hits. Evelyn Lilley pitched the first inning, taking the loss for Potsdam. Jasmine Jandreau finished the contest.

Massena’s Brittany Streeter had three hits and with three runs. Kirkey hit the ball three times, scoring twice.

Potsdam’s Kelsey Green doubled and connected for two runs.

The Lady Raiders were to have played Franklin Academy in the Section 10 Class A Championship Game SUNY Potsdam on Wednesday, May 27.
