AFS is Seeking 3 Mohawk Immersion Teachers (various levels)

PURPOSE OF POSITION:

To provide complete Mohawk language immersion education and instruction to all students. While this serves to outline expectations, The Akwesasne Freedom School strives to build a team who will work beyond job descriptions, who are excited to be at our school and willing to provide total Mohawk language immersion education.

DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

Includes, but is not limited to, the following. Other duties may be assigned as deemed fit.

1. Prepare lesson plans and course of study following AFS curriculum guidelines.

2. Teach all subjects holistically in the Mohawk language and assign lessons/daily homework

3. Observe, evaluate and document student’s oral language proficiency, academic, physical, social, and emotional growth and record results for quarterly report cards.

4. Work with students to identify and develop posters of expected behavior

5. Role model the established limits, language and behavioral expectations, and routines of the classroom and use consequences to ensure students follow expectations

6. Work closely with office staff, students and parents when problems arise.

7. Organize and attend parent meetings to discuss students’ academic & behavioral attitudes & achievements.

8. Adhere strictly to total Mohawk language immersion expectations and AFS policies.

9. Assist with the development and implementation of Mohawk language teaching curriculum.

10. Assist students as needed during recess, snack and lunch

11. Provide language assistance, supervision and instruction in physical activities to students at activity stations during all recesses (morning, noon) and after school

12. Participate in all AFS staff meetings and professional development days.

QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Fluency in the Mohawk language. Teacher should have excellent oral fluency in the Mohawk language and be able to read and write the language.

2. Experience working with children of all ages.

3. Ability to work well with other teachers and parents to plan and coordinate curriculum related activities and carry out the policies and goals of the Akwesasne Freedom School

4. Knowledge of Mohawk culture, history and Longhouse ceremonies

5. Positive attitude & ability to be flexible; dependability and punctuality a must

6. Driver’s license & willingness to use personal vehicle to drive students to field activities

7. Experience and/or training in current techniques and skills in teaching elementary level students in a total immersion environment

8. Good interpersonal skills and communication abilities. Ability to handle stressful situations with patience, understanding, and flexibility.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

Length of employment: One year contract position July 27, 2015 – June 24, 2016

With possibility of extension in other levels. (Deadline for submission: May 15, 2015
