Massena Boys Basketball Win Two Straight

The Massena Red Raiders recently pulled a three-point win over the Salmon River Shamrocks on the road, returning home to defeat the Canton Golden Bears 69-41.

For the Salmon game, the Shamrocks finished the first quarter ahead 19-11, working up to a 33-24 halftime lead. But Massena had their sailing shoes on when the came back for the third quarter. They outscored Salmon River 20-12 in that stanza, behind 45-44 going into the closing period.

Bailey Terry paced Massena's offense with 22 points, the game high. Dante Viskovich tallied 13 points. Bailey LaBarge shot for 10. Xavier Goyco, Zevon Viskovich and Nathaniel Currier contributed five, four and two points, respectively.

Russ Oakes led the Shamrock score sheet with 16 points. Antoine Domino fashioned 13 points. Jordan Wood garnered 12 points and Ben Kelly 10. Tyler Brooks shot for two points.

Returning to Massena on Friday, Jan. 16, the Raiders jumped out to an early lead, but Canton came from behind to go ahead 17-14 at the end of eight minutes. Massena came back to outscore them 56-24 over the next three quarters.

Logan Deshane led Massena shooters with 13 points. Bailey Terry, Dante Viskovich and Zevon Viskovich all completed 10 points. Xavier Goyco pitched in nine points. Nick McKeel recorded six points. Bailey LaBarge and Jacob Goyco each tallied four points. Nathaniel Currier tallied three points.

Massena Girls Trump Shamrocks

After taking a commanding 28-6 first half lead, the host Massena Red Raiders sent the Salmon River Shamrocks back to Fort Covington with a 59-29 decision.

Bailie Young led Massena with 13 points, garnering seven of eight free throws, nine caroms and six steals. Lexis Jacobs tallied 12 points and six swipes. Devin Kelly nailed eight points. Jaylee Jones and Sophia Rusaw each fashioned six points and four boards.

Maeve Curran chipped in four points and six rebounds. Meghan Villnave and Sydnee Carroll tallied three points each, Villnave also grabbing five caroms and Carroll recording six. Kelly Southwick, who also picked up six rebounds, and Stephanie McKeel scored two points each.

Brittany Brooks headed the Lady Shamrocks with13 points, four steals, three assists and four rebounds. Brooke George-Mitchell, who fashioned eight rebounds, and Kera Ghostlaw, who grabbed five, nailed six points each. Brittney George-Mitchell picked up the game high 12 rebounds and Tiffany Connors collected seven. They also recorded two points each.

Raider's Hockey Struggle

The Massena Lady Raiders recently dropped overtime contests to Canton and Ithaca, with their male counterparts also falling to the Golden Bears.

On Saturday, Jan. 17, they lost in overtime to Ithaca on the road 3-2.

On Wednesday, Jan. 14, they hosted the Canton Golden Bears, the sides traded goals for a 3-2 decision. Canton posted an early 1-0 lead, but the sides swapped second period goals, allowing Canton to hold onto the one-goal lead. Massena tied the game in the third period, but Canton pulled out an overtime marker for the win.

A quick pair of goals in the middle stanza denied the Massena Red Raiders boys skaters a win over the Canton Golden Bears on Wednesday, Jan. 14.

It was the Raiders' first loss in an NAC game since 2012-13.

After a scoreless opening period, Massena's Patrick Manning got the team out to a 1-0 lead 3:51 into the middle frame. But Canton's Cody Moore closed the coffin starting 24 seconds later, with his first of two goals for the win. He fashioned what would prove to be the game-winner at 7:25. Canton's victory came in spite of trailing in shots on goal 36-16.

Red Raider's Wrestling

The Massena Red Raiders grapplers recently took a 60-24 contest over the Franklin Academy Huskies, but dropped to the Gouverneur Wildcats in a tie-breaker.

In the match against the Huskies, Massena standout Nolan Terrance, who will wrestle with SUNY Buffalo next season, secured a 1:10 pinfall win over Kyle Wood in the 285 pound class. F.A.'s Chris Recore pinned Raider Shaquel Babb in 16 seconds for the 106 pound bout. Huskies Thomas Tremblay and Hannah Garneau each gained forfeits in the 113 pound class. Skylar Cameron came through for the Raiders in the 120 pound match, pinning Sonny Johnson in 1:14. Massena then saw six of its wrestlers take consecutive pinfall wins: Gavin Perrine over Tyler Tombini in 4:13 (126 pounds), Michael Brown over Dylan Ghostlaw in 40 seconds (132 pounds), Jesse Patraw over Alexander Robideau in 42 seconds (138 pounds), Devin Gauthier over Noah Serarles in 37 seconds (145 pounds), Austin Amo over Dakota Connell in 3:58 (152 pounds) and Hunter Perrine over Damien Burke in 1:49 (160 pounds). Raiders Sinclair Babb at 170 pounds and Jarrett Warriner at 182 each took forfeits. Huskie Robert Dupra pinned Raider Jacob Stiles in 1:14. They were wrestling at 220 pounds.

After wrestling to a 30-30 tie, each with an equal number of wins and pins, it came down to which team forfeited more matches, which Massena had done one time more than their opponents, causing a 31-30 loss.

Among Massena's wins was Nolan Terrance, with a 1:17 pin victory over Kelly Moore in the 285 pound class.

Wildcat Zach Forsythe opened the night with an 11-4 decision over Jesse Patraw at 138 pounds. Joey Bush followed by pinning Red Raider Devin Gauthier in 1:51 for the 145 pound class. Massena's Austin Amo beat Austin Malone in a 14-0 decision at 152 pounds. Massena's Hunter Perrine pinned Kyle Jenkins in 1:53 wrestling at 160 pounds.

Gouverneur's Arden Bell claimed a 2-1 decision over Sinclair Babb at 170 pounds. Marty Countryman earned a win for Gouverneur with a forfeit at 182 pounds.

Red Raider Jarrett Warriner then took a 10-1 decision over Brad Drake the the 195 pound bout. Aaron McEathron then pinned Massena's Jacob Stiles in 48 seconds at 220 pounds. Shaquel Babb captured a forfeit win for Massena at 106 pounds. Robyn Carr logged a win by forfeit for Gouverneur at 113 pounds. Skyler Cameron then took a 13-4 decision over Mike Lebow at 120 pounds. Wildcat Daniel Mullin won by 5-3 decision over Gavin Perrine and Michael Brown took a 2-0 decision for Massena over Derrick Stowell at 132 pounds.
