Don't leave your pet out in the cold!

As winter starts to settle in, pet owners face some challenges. We have to deal with cold, wind and snow. One tip that is easy to remember is this; if it is too cold for me outside, then it is too cold for my pet to be out there too. Bring him in the house or on the porch if you can. Animals can easily get hypothermia and frostbite just like we can. Extra care must be taken if your pet is housed outside. Make sure he has adequate shelter to shield from wind, moisture and cold. Ensure that the shelter is not facing the winds, and a door cover helps as well. You should also make sure your pet has adequate water and that it isn't frozen. Most animals don't know how to break the ice, so you need to check the dish frequently to make sure the water isn't frozen. Heated dishes are available at pet supply stores. Your pet may also need additional calories in the wintertime if they are kept outside. Check with your veterinarian to determine if your pet needs additional calories in the winter. It is best to ask yourself this question: Is it too cold for me outside? If it is too cold for you, it is too cold for your pet. Don't leave your pet out in the cold.
