Massena Girl's Lacrosse Team Takes Section 10 Title

Massena was down 6-7 at halftime after being out-hustled by Canton during the Section 10 girl’s lacrosse finals last Thursday at SUNY Canton turf field.

The half time talk by Coach Jeff Slack must have inspired the girls as they came roaring out and fired off nine unanswered goals to win their third consecutive Class C title with a 15-7 win. Senior Alisha Jacobs tied the game at the 2:57 mark of the third period and from there Massena pulled away and prevented the Lady Bears from scoring in the second half.

Jacobs led the Massena attack with six goals and three helpers while fellow senior teammate Erin Francis netted five goals and set up three. Francis was named the Section 10 NAC Most Valuable Player for 2013. Dominique Valancius (2 assists), Devin Kelly, Carlie Leary and Shannon Casey all contributed singletons.

Katie Lapinski and Kali Frank scored two goals and an assist each to lead the Lady Bears. Rachael Huntley (1 assist), Molly McMasters and Makaylee Boak scored a goal apiece. Canton was seeded second in the league going into the playoffs and they end their season with a 10-5 record. Felicity Love stopped 12 shots for the Lady Raiders while Meg Howard turned aside 15 shots for Canton.

Massena 21, Saranac Lake 9

Earlier in the week Massena earned the right to defend its Section 10 Class C crown by defeating Saranac Lake 21-9 at the Mike Nicholas Field.

Captain Dominique Valancius, Midfield: Dominique is the daughter of Ed and Kathy Valancius. In the fall she will be attending Castleton State College in Vermont to study athletic training and play soccer. Dominique is a six year member of the girl’s varsity lacrosse team and will leave the program with over 100 points, currently on 69 goals and 36 assists.

Erin Francis dominated the scoring with eight goals and two assists while teammates Alisha Jacobs (3 assists) and Shannon Casey (1 assist) put away four goals each. Carlie Leary netted two goals and set up two while Dominique Valancius (1 assist), Devin Kelly and Ellen Green added singletons. Abby LaClair and Sophia Rusaw contributed single helpers.

Felicity Love made four saves for the Lady Raider win.

Massena 21, Heuvelton 9

On May 17th the Lady Raiders played their last home against Heuvelton and honored six graduating seniors.

Massena raced out to a 14-4 halftime lead and continued on to a 21-9 convincing win.

At halftime six seniors were recognized for their dedication and hard work to the Massena girl’s varsity lacrosse program. The seniors are Erin Francis, Alisha Jacobs, Courtney Patterson, Dominique Valancius, Steffanie Premo and Astrid Fabia.

Erin Francis added seven more goals to her record -setting scoring total along with four assists. Alisha Jacobs netted six goals and five helpers while Dominique Valancius tallied three goals and two assists. Steffanie Premo (1 assist), Devin Kelly, Alanna Pyke and Sophia Rusaw all added one goal each. Goal tending duties were shared by Annalee Beckstead with two saves and Felicity Love with four saves.
