UNOH DIRTcar Nationals Super DIRTcar Series Big-Block Modifieds Volusia Speedway Park – Barberville, FL

Winner of the World of Outlaws Late Model Series 2013 National Finals is #29 Darrell Lanigan of Union, Kentucky. NASCAR races are loud, with drivers being far removed from most fans. Dirt car races are loud and dirty and intimate, where you can access even the most successful and popular drivers easily.

In an exciting finish, to cap an exciting week of racing In Super DIRTcar Series action, Brett Hearn was dominating the 50-lap finale before blowing a right rear with 15 laps to go and turning over the lead to Mario Clair. Hearn’s crew quickly changed the tire and he charged back through the 28-car field. Hearn moved to second with two to go and slid past Clair in turns 1 and 2 after taking the white flag. Hearn then held off Clair to the finish for his 21st victory at Volusia.

“I may have clipped a lapped car when I tried to split these guys off of turn four,” said Hearn, a seven-time Super DIRTcar Series champion from Sussex, NJ. “I’m sure we bent a wheel or something. Our car got tighter and tighter but we were still going through lapped cars like they were stopped. When I got that flat tire, we didn’t have the same compound to put back on the car. I could tell by the dejected look on the crew that they weren’t ready to change that tire with the same compound so I just went out there to do the best I could do.”

Stewart Friesen found the winner’s spirit on Thursday, February, 21, in the second of four Super DIRTcar Series feature races during UNOH DIRTcar Nationals presented by Summit Racing Equipment, but that wasn’t enough to earn the number one spot in the finals, Friesen finished a strong fourth.

Pictured here is Stewart Friesen #85 who finished 4th in the Big Block Modified Nationals. Friesen is from Niagara on the Lake, Ontario.

“I was able to roll in the middle, I was good on the bottom, good on the top,” Friesen, of Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario, said of driving on the track at Volusia Speedway Park. “We had a really balanced car, which is key.” Racing on a balmy evening, Friesen used the momentum he had built throughout the week to win big.

Lanigan Wins in DIRTcar Nationals Finale

Darrell Lanigan, the defending World of Outlaws Late Model Series champion, out raced Tim McCreadie and Josh Richards in the 50-lap race to win for the first time at Volusia Speedway Park. Richards tried to close the gap down the stretch but Lanigan was too strong, winning by .990.

“I changed my line around a bunch down in three and four to try and get good,” said Lanigan, of Union, KY. “For the last five laps I found a pretty good line right through the middle there. My car was awesome there and we were able to hold on. I got to thank my crew. They worked hard all week to put this car back together (after a Tuesday-night crash). We put it on the jig to straighten it out and it was awesome tonight.”
