Akwesasne Warriors Trump 1000 Islands 5-1

The Akwesasne Warriors faced off against the 1000 Islands team this past Friday night at the Anowara:kowa Arena. With the addition of two defensemen recently signed to the team, Pat Brunet and Jeremy Van Hoof, having a strong defensive force has really shown on the ice. The home team crowd eagerly cheered on the Warriors, especially the children from the AMBE schools who were given free admission into the game courtesy of Express Gas.

The first goal of the night was made by the Warriors’ Ahmen Mahfouz off a powerplay at 5:34 on the clock, assisted by Pierre Dagenais and Joshua Desmarais. After a trip to the penalty box for Board Checking the second goal was scored by Dagenais at 11:48, with assists going to Daniel Sauve and Dan Tessier.

The Warriors closed out the second with two more goals late in the period, the first by Dagenais at 18:50, his second of the night, with assists going to Mahfouz and Tessier. The second goal closely followed at 19:35 by Martin Beauline assisted off the stick of Kyle Legace. A strong effort by the Goalie Nicolas St. Laurent kept the 1000 Islands to a scoreless first two periods.

The 1000 Islands team surged into the third period with a vengeance, with a fight erupting between one of their defensemen and Legace. The Warriors scored their final goal of the night by Addison Pelkey at 5:43 with assists going to Beauline and Michael Byrd. The 1000 Islands team scored their one and only goal of the night at 8:41 by Tyler Fernandez, bringing the final score to 5-1.

“We played very well and with intensity here tonight, this game is what we needed to get back in the win column,” stated Head Coach Angelo Sanseverino about the game that night.

When asked about joining the Akwesasne Warriors, Jeremy Van Hoof stated, “This arena is fun with a great atmosphere and I feel really lucky to be able to play here.”

The captain for the Warriors stated, “We played really good hockey tonight, having a full lineup has helped a lot, especially since these guys have great experience.”

The team is expecting another potential player signing in the coming weeks to fill out their bench.

The Warriors’ game scheduled for Sunday Dec. 12 was postponed due to inclement weather.
