November and December Athlete Students at SRCS – 2008

November’s winners Tahentahawi Chubb and Bill Benko.

The Salmon River Athlete Students for November and December have been selected by their coaches. Their photographs will hang along with September and October choices and each will also receive certificates from the Salmon River Athletic Hall of Fame and a $25 certificate from Akwesasne Jreck Subs. Members of the Hall of Fame Joe Binion and Bill Plante made the presentation to the students.

November’s first winner is Tahentahawi Chubb for her participation in the sport of Salmon River Cross Country. She has been a six year athlete in her sport and has competed in the New York State Championship meet four out of six of the years. This year, 2008, Tahentahawi finished the season as one of the top finishers for the Salmon River team at the state meet. A female and a male NY state meet competitors are selected by other teams to receive the honor in sportsmanship. The award is called “The Travis Friedrich Award,” and was presented to Tahentahawi. Travis Friedrich was a Gouverneur runner who eventually served in the Armed Forces and was killed in the Middle East. Each year, this award is given to two runners in his honor. Her coach Danny Mainville selected her for the Athlete Student and said her leadership will be missed as she is a Senior this year.

Coach Joe Binion nominated William Benko for the Athlete Student for November in the sport of SR Boys Varsity Basketball. William made his debut against Gouverneur as he scored 17 points to lead the Shamrocks in scoring for the game. Since then, William had been the Shamrock’s leading scorer, team leader in free throw percentage, and a tenacious defender on the court. Congratulations to William on his being chosen for this selection.

The Salmon River Girls Varsity Hockey Team has a player who been nominated for December by her coach Jim Barnes. Skylar King was selected for her performances in December’s games. She had scored four goals, and two assists for a total of six points. Skylar has scored some key goals for the Shamrocks. She scored two goals including the game winner in Skaneateles and also the winning goal against Saranac Lake. Skylar is a first year player and is considered to be one of the Shamrock’s top forwards.

December’s winners Skylar King and Matt Healy

The Salmon River Shamrock Boys Hockey Team has a player on their team that has earned his spot as goalie. Varsity Coach Tim Cook has selected Matt Healy for the Athlete Student of the month for December. Matt was introduced to the Varsity team by having to replace a three year veteran after two periods of play. The game was in a tough building with a big crowd. It didn’t matter, Matt, a freshman, only gave up a goal on a penalty shot in the third. In his first career start the following Friday, Healy shutout Section X Division 2 Champions Thousand Islands on the road 3-0. The next day, Matt followed that up with another shutout, 2-0 over Alex Bay. Healy has taken over the starting role and hasn’t skipped a beat as the team entered a game against Malone. Salmon River league record is now 4-1. Congratulations Matt.
