The Akwesasne Holiday Helpers are holding the annual toy and food drive at the Saint Kateri Hall/Center this weekend, November 25 and 26, from 9:00am to 4:00pm. They will be accepting toys, food and taking applications for food baskets. The Helpers are asking for nonperishables: canned goods - cranberries, gravy, vegetables; boxed stuffing and macaroni; toys for boys and girls for ages 13 and under; and gifts for our elders 62 and older. The St. Regis Mohawk School was alive with Native song and dance. Last Friday, November 17, Native American Day was celebrated at the Hogansburg school. The day consisted of storytelling, singing and social dancing, and arts and crafts. The day was divided up into classes. The School Climate Committee on Nov. 16 recommended that Massena Central Board of Education keep the name Red Raiders and find a new mascot that is not the former chieftain head. The meeting was held at the Hogansburg Akwesasne Volunteer Fire Department from 6:30 to 7:30. The Holiday Helpers program will return for the third year, and a program coordinator expects they will assist more than last year’s total of 3,709 community members. MASSENA -- The Sanit Regis Mohawk Tribe is asking the Town of Massena to allow them to place a kiosk at the town’s canoe launch on state Route 37 near the Alcoa East plant.
