  • Memorial Bench Finds New Home at the Kanatakon School

    Rease Doxtdator|Nov 14, 2013

Never doubt that a small group of committed people can change the world; indeed it is the only thing that ever has. Margaret Mead While the group of people gathered on Remembrance Day in the Kanatakon School gymnasium was small, their intent was honorable. There was no head table with dignitaries; no rambling speeches; and no obligatory hand shaking. Instead, the group of people was brought together because of a small, stone Bench and the history and experiences it represented. This Bench had...

On Veterans Day, the American Legion held a ceremony to honor veterans. Fifty-year member Mary Francis guessed they have been doing the event for close to that many years. The official speech, prayers, color guard and salute was held on Nov. 11, at 11 a.m., the date and time of the armistice that ended World War I in 1918. The date was declared a national holiday, Armistice Day, in 1919 by then-President Woodrow Wilson. The holiday was renamed to include all veterans in 1954. Veterans Day is...

  • Otter 'Top Lot Award' Received by Akwesasne Trapper Danny Jacobs and Tribe's Environment Division Collaboration Credited

    Nov 14, 2013

Akwesasne – Late fall along the St. Lawrence River is easily recognized by dropping water temperatures, shoreline ice and the first snow fall giving way to winter. Bitter cold winters are iconic of the St. Lawrence River Valley, and an important factor for production of high quality pelts of aquatic fur bearing animals such as the otter, mink, beaver and muskrat. As the season changes colder, the 'skin' of fur bearing animals adapts with thicker insulated skin and thicker waterproofed body f...

    Samantha McMillon Wilkinson|Nov 14, 2013

    Doug George Kanentiio|Nov 14, 2013

In the fall of 1813 the war between Britain and the US was stumbling towards a stalemate. An Anonymous Mom|Nov 14, 2013

This weekend big brother turned nine. He didn’t want a big party, he couldn’t even pick out what kind of present we could buy him. A month ago he wanted to go to New York City for his birthday and invite a few friends over instead of the party. As the time came up we asked him about his birthday plans. He said he’d like his friends to come hang out, go eat Chinese food and just relax. What a kid! We went to eat at a Chinese restaurant over in Cornwall. I’d have to say it was a treat not to decorate and clean up. It’s always a team of us, grand...

  • The Fierce Beast
