  • The Dark Side of the ‘Trust’ Relationship and Plenary Power

    Steven Newcomb|Aug 30, 2012

August 23, 2012 In 1942, the renowned legal scholar Felix Cohen famously wrote about the Spanish origin of Indian rights in the federal Indian law conceptual system of the United States. The two concepts of a “trust relationship” and “plenary power” are aspects of that system that find their origin in domination. Let us begin with the idea of a “trust,” which is typically and habitually invoked by Indian country, usually without developing a deeper understanding of that concept and its origin historically. When we follow Cohen’s suggestion and...

Canada’s New Polymer $20 Note—A Means to Remember OTTAWA, Aug. 27, 2012 /CNW/ - For most of us, references to Vimy Ridge only hint at a distant high school history lesson on the First World War. But with the passing of Canada’s last veteran of the First World War in 2010, it is becoming increasingly important for us to remember the sacrifices of a generation of men and women whose lives were touched by war. Each November we don our poppies as a symbol of remembrance, but this year we’ll have another reason to pause and take note. The new pol...

  • Growing

    An Anonymous Mother|Aug 30, 2012

It was time to do school shopping again and for the first time I was done a week and a half early! I usually wait right until the weekend before school, but I had the opportunity to go this past weekend instead of next. What a relief to have it done and have all their new stuff tucked away in the drawers waiting for the beginning of a new school year. The reason why I would always wait until the very last minute with Big Brother’s shopping was he would grow right around the end of summer, every summer. Then he shoots up again about a month i...

    Tehanetorens|Aug 30, 2012

This belt records the condition of the early white people who came to the Iroquois Country. The strong outside diagonal lines supporting the weak inside diagonal line represents the Five Nations, the Iroquois. The thin, weak inside line represents the early whites. The Indians supported these early whites, holding them up so that they would not fall down, that is, showing them how to hunt, to farm, and teaching them how to survive and live in this country until they were strong enough to...

  • Food Safety for Labor Day Celebrations

    Aug 30, 2012

Proper food handling practices can prevent summer celebrations from being threatened by foodborne illness. The warm temperatures that draw crowds of people to outdoor celebrations also encourage the growth of bacteria, and incidents of food-related illnesses rise in summer months. But four simple steps—Clean, Separate, Cook, and Chill—can help families prevent foodborne illness. USDA Under Secretary for Food Safety Dr. Elisabeth Hagen said, “Small children and the elderly are among the most vulnerable to foodborne illness, and this information...
