  • Salmon River Central School Budget and Election Results

    The Salmon River Central School District community approved the $28,388,600 budget for the 2015-16 school year on Tuesday night, with 647 votes in favor and 244 votes against. The $28.3 million dollar budget will leave the tax levy unchanged and is a 3.67% decrease from the current year’s budget. Also approved with a 705 to 187 vote margin, was the purchase of four 66-passenger school buses. Additionally, 692 voters approved a non-voting student representative on the board of education.     Boys Lacrosse SR-15, Watertown-3 This win marked the 100th win for Salmon River Coach Jim Barnes over his six years as head coach. His overall record, at the time of this win, is 100-5. The five losses did not happen against an NAC regular season or Section 10 playoff opponent. The score at halftime was a close 3-2 lead for the Shamrocks but by the second half the Shamrocks shook off their bus legs and got to work scoring seven unanswered goals in the third quarter.     Alanna's choice of school after graduating from Massena Central will be to attend classes at Yale. Her field of interest is Bio-Medical Engineering. Her interest in that area was sparked when she attended Clarkson's Engineering Camp in grade 8 through the Horizon's Program.     On Friday, May 15, 2015, the St. Lawrence Centre Arena was the place to see some great amateur MMA fights at Spirit FC 7. There were ten fights scheduled with four title fights and a special Lance Sawyer Memorial fight. Fighters came from Schenectady, Gouverneur, Malone, Massena, Akwesasne and more.     Our game was celebrated and a deeper appreciation for Canada's National Sport was on display at the Anowarako:wa Arena last weekend. The Akwesasne Tewa'a:raton Festival was a two day event featuring a lacrosse tournament, history classes of the game and Akwesasne's contribution to it.     The Saint Lawrence Seaway Development Corporation reports that on Saturday, May 16 at approximately 4:00 p.m., the Canadian inland vessel ALGOMA SPIRIT, carrying a cargo of grain, ran aground east of the Seaway International Bridge. There were no injuries reported and there was no pollution as a result of the grounding. Commercial navigation was suspended at 4:11 p.m. that afternoon.
