The former Hab had 10 shots on net recorded as well. • In Memory

    Mar 31, 2011

My Angel Baby I never got to see your eyes. Or hold your hand, or hear your cries. All I have are dreams of you, Those of which, will never come true. My heart sank the day that I knew, I would never get to meet you. The day I knew something was not right, And through many tears I would have to fight. Now, all I do is dream every night, About what life would have been like. What if you really had been born? But, all we have are dreams like that, And all we can do is mourn. We will not mourn for you though, Because we know you’re where you n...

Thank you Akwesasne! On Saturday, March 19th a benefit was held in support of Bill and Andreas Herne. This event was a great success, and will most surely ease the financial burden in their fight for wellness. We have witnessed Akwesasne’s true Mohawk heart, as friends, family and neighbors stopped by to partake of this season’s first chicken BBQ, drop off an item for the auction, buy tickets, bring in your gift of food, or lend a helping hand. Thanks go out to the American Legion 1479 and the ladies auxiliary for showing us the ropes. Spe...

Letter to the Community and Editor: She:kon/Dear All, This letter and my expression of gratitude to several community members would have been submitted earlier were it not for a very sudden and thankfully brief illness, rather than disrespect and ingratitude. On Kaieríhaton/Thursday, Ennisko:wa/March 17, 2011 the Akwesasne Task Force on the Environment, the Akwesasne Museum and the St. Regis Mohawk Tribe met with invited basket makers and black ash log harvesters/pounders to talk about the imminent threat of Emerald Ash Borer (EAB). Letter to the editor, In the mid-1990’s Ernie Benedict and Brian Skidders met and invited a group of Japanese people to Akwesasne. They renovated, at their own expense, the house on Akwesasne Freedom School land on Route 37 and lived there for 2 years sharing their knowledge and healing with us. They planted gardens and shared their produce with us. The cultural exchange incl...

The new, large room will give the program a place to host events like graduation, parent activity nights, and any performances or special events throughout the year. • Weight Loss and Health Secrets with Jason Christoff

    Mar 31, 2011

Last week I started to review the top 5 foods that can make the human body diseased and fat in no time flat. I started off with naming processed omega-6 vegetable oils as the gold medal winner in this category. Some of these common oils are canola, soy, safflower, corn, sunflower, cottonseed etc. These are most common as primary ingredients in commercial salad dressings, margarines and secondary ingredients in most processed “food like” things. Although we have never consumed these oils in excess as we evolved, the “experts” of the day continu...

  • The People of the Longhouse

    EM Chadwick|Mar 31, 2011

Unlike most Indian Nations, whose history is generally little more than vague tradition, interesting to few but ethnologists and other scientists, the People of the Longhouse, Iroquois, or Six Nations (formerly Five Nations), as they are variously termed, possess a reliable history of respectable antiquity and of great interest, the main incidents of which have fortunately been preserved, partly by the traditions and historical wampum belts of the Nations, and partly by writers, especially the Hon. Cadwallader Colden, David Cusick, a Tuscarora...

    Mar 31, 2011

TIVERTON, Ont. - Bruce Power says it’s delaying plans to ship 16 radioactive steam generators through the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence River. Bruce Power president Duncan Hawthorne says the delay will allow further discussion with First Nations, Metis and others seeking additional information about the shipment. The company wants to ship the generators — giant steel cylinders the size of a school bus — from an Ontario nuclear plant to Sweden for recycling. The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission issued a transport licence and certificate to Br...

  • Motherhood is.

    An Anonymous Mother|Mar 31, 2011

Being a mom is embracing all the unexpected. I never thought I would do a lot of things. However the most surprising part of it all is my reaction and the instinct that kicks in so quickly during these unexpected situations. I finally went out and bought myself some new clothes. The best thing I found was a dress that was just my size and favorite color but when I checked out I found out that the dress I fell in love with was 70% off! When Friday night rolled around I was home with sick baby. He had a rough sounding cough so instead of going...

  • Senior Moments

    Rosemary Bonaparte|Mar 31, 2011

I’ve had a computer for quite a few years and there are some great things about it if I can figure them out. I have to have patience when I’m using it. A few years ago when I had a part time job, my boss was in Ottawa and Judy and I were in Akwesasne. He got us on the Skype program so we could each be at home and have a meeting with him while he was in Ottawa. I followed all the directions and it wouldn’t work. I went step by step and by the end of the second or third go-round I started swearing. “Why do I have to use this blankety-blank progra...
