  • Ontario passes Bill 186

    Kyrie Ransom|Jun 9, 2011

The Ontario government has done it again with the passage of Bill 186, Supporting Smoke-Free Ontario by Reducing Contraband Tobacco Act, within 6-short weeks. This act is a prime example of the province’s failure to consult with First Nations communities regarding issues that directly impact them. “This is the clearest indication yet that the Government of Ontario does not fully accept its responsibility to consult with First Nations when new laws impact on their rights,” said Grand Chief Randall Phillips representing the view of the Assoc...

  • Letter to the editor

    Jun 9, 2011

Letter to the Editor, I found the Indian Time very interesting this past week of June 2, 2011 because of the letters to the editor. I laughed as I read the letters that supported Cecil Garrow. I found this interesting; he is using the method that Randy Hart used to get the folks to vote him into office. These same individuals have tried to get the Constitutional Government in place years back but failed. Although I see nothing wrong with this government system, mainly because it was how the Iroquois used to have their form of government. But,...

  • Letter to the editor

    Jun 9, 2011

To the Editor, As a former editor of Indian Time, I was very disappointed to see a letter published in the June 2, 2011 issue that was little more than character assassination against Mrs. Barbara Lazore, a former tribal chief and candidate in the recent election. I found especially sad the accusation that because she and her husband ran a bar in Rochester, that she is somehow to blame for those ironworkers who drank their pay-checks away. These men were responsible for their own actions and it is their fault if their families suffered, if...

  • A Reminder of Who We Were: The Writings of Ernest Thompson Seton

    Doug George Kanentiio|Jun 9, 2011

During this time of changes it is helpful to take a look back and recall who we were as Native people. Much of what we believe has been somewhat distorted by the media, formal educational systems, books, movies and popular music. We now identify with symbols of our Indian status rather than actually living according to our ancestral values. But it was only a generation or two ago when the American Indian defined life by its beauties rather than its material potentials. An important book to read which summarizes Native society was written by...

  • What They Are and What They Do

    Mary Carol Randall MA|Jun 9, 2011

Support groups are a place for people to give and receive both emotional and practical support as well as to exchange information. People with genetic health conditions, as well as their friends and families find support groups to be a valuable resource — a place where people can share medical information, get confirmation that their feelings are “normal,” educate others, or just let off steam. When someone is searching for a support group, the single most important thing to remember may be: if the group doesn’t feel right to you or doesn’t...
