RUTH A. SMOKE

AKWESASNE – Ruth A. Smoke, 79, of Smoke Road, passed away late Sunday evening, May 19, 2024 at Massena Rehabilitation and Nursing Center.

Ruth was born October 15, 1944 in Syracuse, the daughter of the late Jason and Edna (Lynch) Gay. She attended and graduated from schools in Syracuse. In February 1963, she married Louie R. Smoke at St. Regis Catholic Church with Rev. Francis Arsenault officiating.

Ruth was a dedicated wife, mother, and grandmother and was extremely proud of all of them. She enjoyed doing ceramics, crossword puzzles, playing games on the computer, and enjoyed the company of her grandchildren. She was a communicant of St. Regis Catholic Church and a member of the Akwesasne Death Benefits Group.

Ruth is survived by her loving husband, Louie; her sons, Mitchell Smoke and Brandon Smoke (Natalia), all of Akwesasne; her daughter-in-law, Becky Smoke; her beloved grandchildren, Riley, Kristian, Nathan, Aleesha, Alan, Brayden, Braxen, and Raelynn; her grandchildren, Skylar, Scarlet, Letti, and Jett; her sister, Jane Cook of Akwesasne; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, Ruth was predeceased by two sons, Louie R. Smoke, Jr on December 22, 1974 and Mark P. Smoke on March 21, 2010; a daughter-in-law, Carol Smoke on December 31, 2022; her brother, Jason Gay; and three sisters, Edna Heard, Jean Dyer, and Mildred Falter.

Arrangements are under the care and guidance of the Donaldson Funeral Home, Massena, where friends may call on Wednesday 4-7:00 PM. Funeral Services will be held at 10:00 AM on Thursday at the funeral home with Rev. Jerome Pastores, officiating. Burial will be held privately in St. Joseph's Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, those wishing may consider memorial contributions to be made in her memory to the Akwesasne Boys and Girls Club.
