A Voice from the Eastern Door

Project Sticker Shock

On Wednesday, April 19th students from the Akwesasne Youth Coalition joined staff of the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe's Alcoholism/Chemical Dependency Prevention Program (A/CDP) and the Compliance Department to participate in the annual "Project Sticker Shock" campaign.

The campaign is an annual community wide effort to help create safer, healthier lifestyles by reducing underage drinking and helping to enforce underage drinking laws. This project provides youth the opportunity to have a voice in addressing the problem of social availability of alcohol to minors by placing warning stickers on beer cases and tags on wine bottles at local convenience stores within Akwesasne. The sticker reminds and warns customers that it is illegal to purchase or provide alcohol to anyone under the age of 21. Underage drinking has always been a community concern and the most effective way to address it is through community involvement with the participation of everyone.

Niawenkó:wa to the following businesses for helping us create a healthier and safer community: Bears Den Western Door, Smokers Warehouse, Big Boys Gas & Tobacco, Akwesasne Mini-Mart, CT's Convenience Store, Twinleaf (Akwesasne & Fort), Another Damn Cigarette Shop, Truck Stop #9, Speedway, East End Convenience and Red Fox.

Also, a big shout out to all the students who volunteered to make this another successful eye-opening campaign. Carrie Benedict, SRMT Compliance Officer, and A/CDP Prevention staff Vanna White, Kyrsha Angus and Tahentahawi Chubb greatly appreciate and thank you for all their help!
