Great River Cleanup 2023

A series of Great River Cleanups planned to occur at various locations along the St. Lawrence River this summer

This year, the Great River Cleanup has expanded, with multiple partner organizations committed to hosting and collaborating on four major cleanups along the shores of the St Lawrence River from Clayton, NY to Saguenay Protected Marine Park, QC. Partners include the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne Environment Program, the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe Environment Division, the River Institute, Save- The-River, the Great River Network, Ocean Wise and the St. Lawrence Parks Commission.

The first in the series of four cleanups is taking place on May 4th, 2023, at the St. Lawrence Parks Commission’s Mille Roches Beach. This event is hosted by the St. Lawrence Parks Commission and is open to Parks staff and partner organizations.

A second cleanup, hosted by Ocean Wise and Combattez le Fleau, will take place at Saguenay Protected Marine Park, Quebec on May 24th, 2023. This cleanup will include volunteers from the Ocean Bridge Ambassador 2023 St. Lawrence River Cohort.

The third and largest cleanup is the Akwesasne Community Shoreline Cleanup, hosted by the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne Environment Program, taking place June 3rd, 2023. This cleanup is supported by the St. Lawrence Parks Commission and is open to Akwesasne community members and partner organizations. This event will recruit volunteers to collect garbage by foot along the roads and shorelines, and by boat in the river. Volunteers and partner organizations will be recruited to bring their boats (including motorized boats, kayaks and canoes). Based on prior experience, it is anticipated that 10 to 20 boats will be present, as well as approximately 150 volunteers.

On July 28th and 29th, 2023, Save-the-River (Clayton, NY) will host the fourth and final cleanup of the series along the southern shoreline of the river, and welcomes volunteers from the community to participate.

The River Institute was established in 1994 as a unique community partnership involving the Mohawks of Akwesasne, government, education, and industry. Its mandate is to conduct environmental research, education, and outreach with a focus on the Great Lakes / St. Lawrence River ecosystem.
