Opening Reception for the 2023 Iroquois Museum Featured Exhibit

HOWES CAVE – The Iroquois Museum will be holding the opening reception for the featured exhibition on May 6, 2023 from 1 to 4 pm. This year’s exhibition is titled Oil & Water: Works by Ernest Smith, Jesse Cornplanter, and James Beaver from the Iroquois Museum collection. The exhibit showcases 3 early Haudenosaunee artists and the impact of the Seneca Arts Project (part of the WPA Indian Arts Project) in the context of cultural assimilation and revitalization.

Perry Ground will be the guest speaker at the opening. Perry is a member of the Onondaga nation, a well-known storyteller, and the nephew of featured artist Ernest Smith. The Iroquois Indian Museum is an independent nonprofit cultural museum founded in Schoharie County, NY in 1981. It houses the largest collection of contemporary Iroquois art in the world and offers a window into Iroquois culture and history through archaeology, visual arts, and performing arts. The 7,300 square-foot facility inspired by the traditional Iroquois longhouse presents changing and permanent exhibits, the Children’s Museum, and the Museum Shop, which features hand-crafted Iroquois art, silver, and leatherwork. The museum is surrounded by a 45-acre Nature Park, two 19th-century log houses formerly on the Six Nations Reserve, and a 500-seat outdoor covered amphitheater.
