A Voice from the Eastern Door
The Akwesasne Cultural Center Library & Museum is host to the third artist in a yearlong series of local artists - Yvette Cook White. Cook-White has several of her painting on display in a small, but powerful display of older and newer works.
The first gallery artist in this series to display their artwork was Dave Fadden in March. The well-known and accomplished artist portrays contemporary and past visions of Haudenosaunee people. He is also recognized as a storyteller, illustrator, writer, and sculptor. The second artist of the month in March was Sue Ellen Herne who has over forty years of thought provoking paintings and art installations.
Yvette Cook-White was on hand Saturday to greet visitors and eagerly answered questions about her paintings, their meanings and how varied their interpretations can be. Her use of color and abstract use of shapes convey images close to her, her family, her community, its future, and the future of the planet itself. Her use of color sometimes gives more interpretations than meets the eye.
Yvette's artwork is on display until the end of the month – April 28th. The Cultural Center & Museum is open from Monday to Saturday and closed on Sunday.
Yvette said, "I am an abstract mixed media artist, I got a late start in art went to school when I was 33 and been doing all I can since. I love art of all kinds earning my fine arts diploma through Iohahiio via St Lawrence college and SUNY Potsdam bachelor's degree and visual arts I am now gaining confidence it really helped having a show this month that the Akwesasne Cultural Museum. We have so many gifted artists here, I'm so proud to be one of them.
Some of my process, I draw on my own experiences sometimes I paint with no intention but just to put paint on a canvas, that can evolve into a more meaningful painting which it has in many cases of my work. Being limited to my home to create work is why I try so many different things because art can be made in many forms... which is one of the things I love about it. I also believe in its power to heal. My goal is to teach all contemporary arts to all of our future artists."
