Search Takes on Different Approach for Missing Akwesasronon

By Kaniehtonkie.

The search for Casey Oakes, who was reported missing on March 30, 2023, has taken on a different approach. The HAVFD, SQ divers and SQ Air Support concluded their search yesterday, April 4th.

Today is the last day coordinated agencies will conduct the joint search for Oakes – the Akwesasne Mohawk Police Service (AMPS), OPP and RCMP marine units will continue to search waterways starting at noon.

After today, only the Akwesasne Mohawk Police Service will resume the search with their regular marine patrols, which consists of a three-man police marine boat.

The Akwesasne Mohawk Police Service (AMPS) continues to seek the public’s assistance in locating Oakes. Oakes was last seen boarding a boat on Wednesday, March 29 on the east end of Kawehno:ke.

Investigators now believe Casey Oakes was connected to the eight deceased victims recovered from the water last week. The investigation is still in its early stages, and investigators are still trying to piece together what transpired.

Deputy Chief of Police, LeeAnn O’Brien stated, “Part of this investigation is determining whether this travel was facilitated by an individual or individuals. Right now, it’s still too early in the investigation and we are still trying to piece together what happened.”

AMPS ask if you have any information to assist with the investigation, please contact Akwesasne Mohawk Police at 613-575-2340 or submit a secure tip by email at [email protected].

“Even the smallest bit of information could be significant,” said Acting Staff Sergeant Detective Kariwate Mitchell.

If you wish to provide information that would help investigators and would like to remain anonymous, call the Seaway Valley Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.

The AMPS ask media and community members to please avoid the search area.
