Correction - Salmon River's Class of 2022
By Andy Gardner.
In Indian Time’s Vol. 40 #2, July 7th Graduation issue, we incorrectly identified Salmon River 2022 valedictorian. Salmon River Central 2022 valedictorian is Kiyah Francis. We earnestly apologize for this error and offer our sincere and profound apology to Kiyah Francis, her family, and friends.
FORT COVINGTON – Salmon River Central awarded diplomas to 95 students who walked in the Friday, June 24 graduation ceremony for 2022.
Several hundred relatives, guardians, friends, and supporters packed a field next to the school while the graduates were seated facing them on bleachers.
Several of those who spoke at one point, or another touched on a common theme – getting back to public life amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
“We’re all out here being in a normal situation. I’m thankful for that,” Superintendent of Schools Stanley Harper said. “When you take this step forward, you’ll start a new chapter in your … life journey.”
“Never underestimate the power of kindness and empathy,” he added.
The class leaders were valedictorian Kiyah Francis and salutatorian Madison Mora-Williams.
“I’m honored to be here today standing as a Native student and a member of the Akwesasne Mohawk community,” Francis said. “Class of 2022, thank you for all the good times, and I wish you the best.”
Mora-Williams opened and closed her speech with quotes and references to legendary country music singer Dolly Parton.
“Find out who you are and do it on purpose,” she said, quoting Parton.
“The spotlight is on us. We play the lead role in everything we do,” Mora-Williams said.
