Snake Island Muskies earn first win of 2022 against Kahnawake Mohawks

The Snake Island Muskies took their first victory of the 2022 season, a razor-thin win at Cornwall Civic Complex against the Kahnawake Mohawks on Friday, June 24.

After trailing 2-0 going into the second period, the Muskies rallied to tie the game 7-7 going into the final stanza that came down to the last goal.

At 2:51 in the second period, Andrew Lazore passed to Tristan Thompson who found the back of the Kahnawake net for the first Snake Island goal. Twenty seconds later, Joe Hall tied the game on a play set up by Thompson and Ryan Thomas. Nick Angus pushed the Mohawks back out to a two-goal advantage after two powerplay goals six seconds apart with assists on both markers coming from Markie Kirby and Kerry Kane. Kahnawake fashioned three more goals up to the 10:13 mark, off the sticks of Kirby, Cam Horne and Hank Delisle. Assists on the plays went to Horn, Kirby, Kaniataroton Deer and Stone Jacobs. Snake Island took over and produced five goals of their own before the buzzer.

They were scored by Ryan Dewar (from Hall and Ty Thompson), Hall (from Ty Thompson), Ty Thompson (from Hall), Hall unassisted and then again from Hall, assisted by Shane Francis.

With the game knotted at 7-7, the Muskies pushed ahead to their first lead of the tilt 1:02 into the third period with a goal from Dewar, assisted by Joe Hall and Ty Thompson. Ty Thompson widened the Snake Island lead to 9-7 at 3:57 on a play set up by Danit Lazore. After 9:55 of stalemate competition, Stone Jacobs reduced the Mohawks’ deficit to 9-8. Ty Thompson scored what would hold up as the game-winning goal for the Muskies, with assists from Dewar and Cam Smith. Hunter Hemlock scored the last goal of the game for the Mohawks, with six seconds left on the clock, assisted by Kirby, but it wasn’t enough to push the game into overtime.

Snake Island goalie Kobe Johnson earned the win. Kahnawake netminder Bluecloud Lahache was tagged with the loss.

One week earlier on June 17, the Muskies and Mohawks played at Kahnawake Sports Complex to a finish with reverse fortunes. Kahnawake won 11-10.

The Mohawks got ahead 5-2 after the first period, with Snake Island goals coming off the sticks of Joe Hall, assisted by Tristan Thompson and Ty Thompson, and Jay Chubb, assisted by Hall. The Muskies started the middle frame with goals at 4:48 and 7:24, respectively from Chubb and Jordan Thomas.

Helpers on the plays came from Hall, who assisted both, and Ty Thompson. The Muskies answered with two more goals in a row, scored by Ratreinhahiens Adams unassisted and Ryan Dewar assisted by Dalston Day. With the score 7-6 Mohawks, Nick Angus scored one last goal of the stanza with 4:37 left before the buzzer with a helper from Kaheriios Montour.

Kahnawake fashioned two more goals in the first 3:45 of the third period, sandwiched around a Snake Island marker from Dewar assisted by Ty Thompson. The Muskies rallied with three goals in a row, tying the game 10-10 with 4:09 left in regulation. They were scored by Wallace Thompson unassisted, Dewar assisted by Ty Thompson and Day assisted by Hall and Chubb. Simon Winquist netted the game-winner for Kahnawake with 1:28 left in the game, assisted by Bluecloud Lahache. The Muskies weren’t able to bounce back one last time and send the tilt into an extra period.

Snake Island goalkeeper Trey Adams was credited the loss. Lahache in the Mohawks goal added a win.

On Friday, June 10 at Kahnwake Sports Complex, the Muskies started the game with a 5-1 lead after 20 minutes, but they were held scoreless in the second period and then were outscored 5-2 in the closing stanza for a 10-7 Kahnawake win.

For Snake Island, Ryan Dewar scored two goals with two assists. Ty Thompson netted a singleton with three helpers. Dalston Day scored once and assisted once. Jay Chubb helped set up two scoring plays.

Joe Hall tallied a pair of goals. Brandon Swamp scored one goal and Cam Smith had one assist.

Goaltender Trey Adams was stuck with the loss.

For the Mohawks, Nick Angus scored a game-high five goals and one assist. Manksu Kirby scored once with four helpers. Steph Charbonneau scored two goals. Stone Jacobs, Hank Delisle and Tyson Two Axe garnered two assists apiece. Cam Horn scored once with one helper. Kaniataroton Deer scored a solo marker and Pete Jacobs fashioned one assist. In nets, Bluecloud Lahache tallied a win.

The Muskies opened their season Friday, June 5 at Bell Centennial Arena in Nepean against the Capital Region Axemen. The teams were tied 2-2 after the first period and 5-5 after 20 minutes. The Axemen dominated the closing frame where they scored five goals and shut out the Muskies. Snake Island’s Joe Hall netted a hat trick with a solo helper. Tristan Thompson scored one goal with an assist. Jake Ricu scored once. Cam Smith tallied a single assist. Goalie Kobe Johnson made 31 saves and garnered a loss.

For the Axemen, Fred Hartley fashioned a game-high four goals and two assists. Two goals apiece came off the sticks of Connor Dent (one assist) and Jacob Gasperetti. Kaleb Bingley notched a pair of helpers. Scott Taylor and Matt Tenute netted singletons. Single assists were contributed by Myles Kenny, Sam Fontaine, Todd Fawcet and Jordan Hendryks. Their goalie, Troi Benedict, made 30 saves and was credited a win.

The Mohawks beat the Axemen 15-4 on Saturday, June 25 at Kahnawake Sports Complex. The

Mohawks’ Cam Horn scored a game-high four goals and three assists. Stone Jacobs scored twice with four helpers. For the Axemen, four players scored solo markers: Jacob Gasperetti, Turner Allison, Connor Dent and Tyler Akins.

On June 18, the Axemen defeated the Mohawks 12-7 at Bell Centennial Arena. Capital Region’s

Gasperetti led the offense with a game-high four goals. Fred Hartley scored twice and assisted once.

For Kahnawake, Stone Jacobs scored a hat trick. Kaniataroton Deer scored a goal with an assist, and Arontase Paul tallied two helpers.
