Akwesasne Freedom School receives $1 million from SRMT

 


The Akwesasne Freedom School has received formal notification the Kanieńkehá immersion school will receive $1 million dollars from the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe. During the SRMT annual draft budget callout, they received thirteen comments in support of funding AFS.

SRMT Communications department stated, “The Tribal Council is committed to contributing $1 million to the school’s new building fund. In addition, the Tribal Council increased its annual Community Support funding to $200,000 per year for its operations.”

Friends of the Akwesasne Freedom School Konwanahktotha Sargent stated, “We want to get all students in one space rather than in 3 separate buildings. We want the new building to be environmentally friendly & energy efficient, situated near the cannery where there is more space. We can utilize the cannery for teaching, too.”

She added, “Because this donation announcement is so new, we have lots to discuss at this time.”

In a Facebook post from AFS, “Niawen ko:wa to the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribal Council for announcing the $1M donation you will be making to the Akwesasne Freedom School, kwah ehson tekwahnonweratens!!!
