At approximately 11am on Wednesday September 11th, Elders from Iakhihsohtha were escorted by MCA Chiefs to Walmart in Cornwall and they were greeted at the front doors by Walmart management. Walmart management publicly apologized for an incident which took place approximately two months prior. The incident was serious enough to make the elders feel unsafe and unwelcome at the storefront, by treatment of both unreceptive Walmart staff and what appeared to be unfriendly customers.

One Iakhihsohtha staff member took to social media the day of the incident. The incident led to many Akwesasronon vowing to boycott the store until the issue was properly addressed and an apology was given to the elders.

Two months later, the elders received their apology.

"We would like to welcome and thank the elders for coming back. We feel poorly about the previous incident. We want our customers to be assured a positive shopping experience. We hope to rectify the misunderstanding and hope everyone feels welcome." stated Walmart Manager Randy McGillis.

Once all was said and done, the elders went on to enjoy a day of shopping at Walmart.

"Council is glad to see the residents of Iakhihsohtha enjoying themselves once again on their weekly shopping trip," stated MCA Grand Chief Abram Benedict. "We wish to remind the public in Akwesasne, Cornwall and everywhere, that elders are one of the most valuable treasures a community can have, and they have earned unconditional respect and kindness."
