Kana:takon School Welcomes Visitors from Bear Island

Submitted by AMBE

Kana:takon School welcomed guests wanting to learn more about its Mohawk Immersion program. Visitors Patsy and John Turner from the Bear Island Reserve, located in the middle of Lake Temagami in Ontario, were offered a tour of Kana:takon School and the opportunity to meet with Alice King, AMBE Superintendent of Mohawk Language and Culture, and Courtney Thomas, Kana:takon School Principal. Bear Lake Reserve has a population of 250 people and just 48 students in their school district. The Turners are both teachers at the Laura McKenzie Learning Centre which enrolls students from junior kindergarten to grade eight. They came to Akwesasne because they hope to eventually operate their own immersion program on Bear Island.
