QUEBEC. (February 9 2019) The Canada Food Inspection Agency, the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (MAPAQ), in collaboration with the Division of Food Inspection of the City of Montreal and the company Food Services Firouz inc. , located at 59, avenue Donegani, in Pointe-Claire , issued a warning to the public not to consume the bakery products manufactured and sold at this establishment, as well as the Betty brand products manufactured by this company and listed in the table below, because they have not been prepared and packaged in such a way as to ensure their safety.

It should be noted, however, that no case of illness associated with the consumption of this food has been reported to MAPAQ so far.”

Betty Bread apologized for the situation in a Feb. 9 release reassuring the public the involved products, according to Betty bread, represented less than 0.5 percent of Betty brands, have been removed from points of sale in Quebec and Ontario.

Betty’s sliced bread products were not part of the recall.

The firm also announced the immediate termination of its manufacturing contract with Alimentaires Firouz without notice.

The Chief Executive Officer of Betty bakery, Guillaume Talbot, following the publication of the food recall published on February 8, 2019 by MAPAQ and by the CFIA offered this apology, “First, I want to clarify that no sliced bread is affected by this recall. Only specialty products manufactured by the Firouz Food Services located in Baie-D’Urfé and representing less than 0.5% of the production of Betty brand products are affected. I also inform that our manufacturing contract with the Food Services Firouz ends immediately and without notice. All other generic products manufactured in our main plant meet all safety standards in effect in Canada. I would also like to point out that we acquired this prestigious brand last December and that the integration process is not complete. The manufacturing volume of this manufacturer under contract being so low, explains why we had not yet inspected this production plan. We sincerely apologize and take very serious note of this situation this morning and we are taking all necessary steps to make this deplorable event an isolated case. Be assured of our full cooperation with the authorities and our full transparency to the public.”

Established in 1932, the Betty brand is present in eastern Ontario and Quebec.
