Raiders come out ahead in Massena-Salmon River boys, girls basketball bouts

Massena and Salmon River went head-to-head in boys and girls basketball with the Raiders taking a win in both games.

On Thursday, Dec. 6, the Raiders and Shamrocks met at Fort Covington with the game narrowly going to Massena by a 59-52 final tally. The Raiders led 31-23 at the half and then went on to outscore Salmon 17-9 in the third and 19-12 in the fourth. Massena’s Tyler Bacon scored a team-high 21 points. Alex Rusaw tossed in 15 points, Chris McGregor scored eight points, Tyler McDonald six, Zach LaBarge five and Ryan Herrick and Josh Sheets two each. Salmon River’s Clayton Jones scored a game-high 22 points, including three from the three-point line. Rarennaehawi Cook-Francis tallied nine points, Greg Burdash scored six, Dylan Beam and Logan Lebehn four each, Lane Oakes three and Patrick Ghostlaw and Cayden Sunday recorded two each.

In the girls game, Massena outscored visiting Salmon River 19-2 in the first quarter and went on to win 61-6 at Massena High School. Octavia Viskovich scored 17 points for Massena, followed by Nova LeGrow with 12, Tsiakoseriio David and Megan Eddy with eight each, Hayleigh Armstrong and Tisha Benedict four each, Shaylena Mandigo three and two each came from Aryssa Hopps and Rhea Bautista. For the ‘Rocks, Jillian Benedict scored three points. Yanenowi Logan and Kamea Thomas each scored two points.

In other boys basketball action, Massena built a 21-12 first quarter lead over visiting Gouverneur and went on to win 65-41. Bacon led the Raiders with 16 points. Rusaw had 14, McGregor 11, McDonald eight, Spencer Beckstead five, Herrick and Sheets four each and Ethan Barney three. For Gouverneur, Brock Cox netted 16 points, Garrison Gonyea had 10, Shane Shampine five, Garret LeClair four, and Josh Miller and Ty Reed three each. The previous Saturday, Dec. 8, Massena won 71-69 in overtime over Indian River. Bacon scored 37 points and pulled down 17 caroms.

In road games on Saturday, Dec. 15, Salmon River won over Tupper Lake 60-50 and General Brown downed Massena 56-33.

On Monday, Dec. 10, Salmon River lost to visiting Ogdensburg 85-37. Jones led Salmon River’s offense with 11 points. Greg Burdash had eight points, Beam seven, Sunday six, Lebehn three and Tori Oakes two. Jackson Jones led OFA with 26 points. John Powers scored 12 points, Brogan LaRose 11 and Michael Reed 10.

On Tuesday, Dec. 11, Massena’s girls basketball team fell to Gouverneur 74-24. Hopps led the Lady Raiders with seven points. David scored six points, Benedict four, two each from Bautista, LeGrow and Viskovich and Mandigo scored one point. For the Wildcats, Elaina Porter scored 21 points, Riley Storrin had 16, Shacoria Jackson 14, Abby Riutta 12, Hillary Cook seven and Laney Smith and Hannah Hight two each.

In Saturday girls games, Canton beat Salmon River 64-20 and Indian River downed Massena 60-45.
