Akwesasne Artist Kit Thomas made her first appearance in an art gallery in California over the weekend. The Illusions Art Exhibit had its Opening Reception on Friday, July 29, 2017, at the Raquel Amaral Studio/Art Gallery in Concord, California. Kit has four pieces in the show, including what she calls the "Bingo Card Ladies," because she used old radio bingo cards in the background of the paintings.
Kit Thomas is Wolf Clan, a member of the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe. She resides in California but recently moved from the Akwesasne Territory. The last few years she had returned home to reconnect with her roots, family and her traditions and culture.
Her artistic process began as a child during frequent excursions to New York City, a contrast to the Adirondack Mountains of upstate NY and Canada. Her art is characterized by vibrant colors, her American Indian roots, urban influences, contrasting shapes and bold composition.

She has shown her work in Plattsburgh, NY; Roanoke, Virginia and Charlotte, NC participating in solo and group exhibitions such as Culture Initiative's 2010 "Cake + 2" & "Contrast," "Sky Woman" at the Native North American Traveling College (Cornwall Island, Ontario) and currently "Wampum Visions." She also participated in "Onkwehonwe Artists: People of the Land" at Pouring Light Studios in Malone, NY.
Kit has been featured online in Native Max Magazine and a book "Dreaming In Indian: Contemporary Native American Voices." She has been nominated for a 2015 Akwesasne Business Excellence Award.
Art has opened up many opportunities for her to participate in other projects. She was a guest speaker at her alma mater, Massena Central High School, and she spoke at Akwesasne's Safe Zone LGBT event "Day of Visibility."
She is also an LGBTQ activist/advocate and exhibited in a speech for an "anti-hate" rally in Plattsburgh, NY. Recently she starred in a documentary called "Open and Out" produced by the Akwesasne Wellness Program and Akwesasne TV.
