Got kittens?

By Jennifer Herne, LVT

How can anyone resist a cute little kitten? I know I can't, but as a responsible pet owner you should be aware of the things that come along with acquiring that cute little ball of fluff.

There are some items needed when you get that kitten, they include: a litter box, kitten food of a quality brand, scratching pads and posts, toys, and dishes, just to name a few.

The most important thing you can do when you get the kitten is schedule a visit to your veterinarian, which is usually around 6 weeks of age. At this initial visit, you will get a physical exam for the kitten, which can alleviate your worries if your kitten is healthy or not, and find out if it's a boy or girl! You may think this is funny but I know many people who find out their Bella is a beast. Haha. You should also receive the kitten's first set of vaccinations at the visit, which will prevent diseases such as upper respiratory infections. At the visit your vet will recommend getting the kitten dewormed. You should get the vaccinations every 3-4 weeks until the kitten reaches the age of about 4 months. Then you will get the vaccinations yearly as well as a physical exam, which is extremely important to keep your cat healthy.

You should also get that kitten spayed or neutered BEFORE they reach 6 months of age. By doing this you can prevent problems that you may not even realize such as unwanted pregnancy and urine marking; the two most common reasons people discard their cats and why they feel they can't keep them anymore. You should create your "cat plan" as soon as you bring that kitten home. Do some research in your community, there are many resources available to help you get your cat spayed or neutered, you just need to find it and plan. Responsible pet ownership starts with you!
