Kana:takon Man Charged with Attempted Murder, Other Charges

 


(December 9, 2016) Akwesasne Mohawk Police Service Media Release – On December 8, 2016 at 4:58 PM, the Akwesasne Mohawk Police received a request for assistance from the Akwesasne Mohawk Ambulance at a residence situated at 146 Hilltop Drive in Akwesasne, Quebec.

Police attended the scene and found a male identified as Walter Oakes seriously injured and laying in the living room in a pool of blood being treated by Akwesasne Mohawk Ambulance members. Mr. Oakes was able to provide information at the scene to first responders that enabled the Akwesasne Mohawk Police to obtain grounds to arrest and identify the suspect as being Chazz C. S. Oakes, 24, of Akwesasne, QC. It is known to the Akwesasne Mohawk Police that there is a direct family relationship between the victim and the suspect.

The Akwesasne Mohawk Ambulance transported the victim to the Cornwall Community Hospital with life threatening injuries. The Akwesasne Mohawk Police did recover what is believed to be the weapon used in the assault at the scene. It is also believed that the suspect attempted to set fire to the residence prior to his departure.

Police began to search the neighboring area for the suspect. With the assistance of the victim’s family, the suspect was located in close proximity of 146 Hilltop Drive. While officers were taking the suspect into custody he actively resisted and caused bodily injuries to one of the arresting officers.

The accused was then transported to the Akwesasne Mohawk Police detachment where he was processed and held for a video court appearance. On Friday, December 9, 2016 the accused appeared on video and was remanded into custody pending a bail hearing in Valleyfield, QC on Tuesday, December 13, 2016.

Chazz C. S. Oakes has been charged with:

• Attempt Murder, contrary to Sec. 239 (1) (b) of the Criminal Code

• Assault, contrary to Sec. 268 of the Criminal code

• Assault on peace officer, Contrary to Sec. 270.01 (1) (a) (2) (a) of the Criminal Code

• Attempt to disarm a peace officer, Contrary to Sec. 270.1(1) (3) (a) of the Criminal Code

• Resist arrest, Contrary to Sec. 129 (a) (d) of the Criminal Code

• Arson, Contrary to Sec. 434 of the Criminal Code
