Massena's Parker Avenue Bridge To Close Monday, Won't Reopen Until Fall 2017

Traffic in Massena looking to cross the Grasse River will not be able to use the Parker Avenue bridge until next year, and the underpass will be closed permanently.

On Sept. 12, the Department of Transportation closed the bridge, which is expected to be shut down until the fall of 2017. They are taking it down and rebuilding the structure.

Drivers will have to cross the Grasse at either the Main Street or Alcoa bridges. Pedestrians can also cross via the footbridge connecting Liberty Avenue and East Orvis Street.

The new Parker Bridge will be two lanes with a pedestrian lane. The underpass connecting to Willow Street is getting scrapped.

In addition to the bridge, Maple and Willow streets will be connected with a new three-way roundabout in front of Blevins Motors.

The DOT closed the bridge’s outer two lanes in 2009 amid safety concerns.

State officials in late 2015 said that the drains were letting too much water run onto the supports, which corroded them over time, but it is still safe to drive on the inner two lanes.
