INFORMATION SESSIONS SCHEDULED FOR TSIKARISTISERE/ DUNDEE CLAIM

The Mohawk Council of Akwesasne has recently concluded negotiations with the Government of Canada regarding the Tsikaristisere/ Dundee Claim.

In 1981 (and revised in 1998) the Mohawks of Akwesasne submitted the Tsikaristisere/Dundee Claim under Canada’s Specific Claims Policy, alleging, among other things, that: the 1888 surrender of their lands was invalid; all leasing of their lands prior to 1888 was illegal; and Canada breached its fiduciary obligations with respect to these matters. By letter dated March 10, 1988 (and December 20, 2002 for the revised claim), Canada accepted the Tsikaristisere/ Dundee Claim for negotiation under the Specific Claims Policy.

On April 29, 2015 the Government of Canada proposed a settlement offer in the amount of $239,808,436 for the full and final settlement of the Tsikaristisere/ Dundee Claim pending the ratification from the Mohawks of Akwesasne. Canada’s settlement offer provides that, subject to Canada’s Additions to Reserves Policy, the Mohawks of Akwesasne will have the opportunity to add up to 18,282 acres of lands to existing Reserve lands.

In the coming weeks and months, the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne will be holding information sessions that will delve deeper into the history and details of the Tsikaristisere/Dundee Claim. The Mohawk Council of Akwesasne urges community members to attend these information sessions to get fully informed before the ratification vote, which will be scheduled at a later date.
